1914 Navy Lugers (Dated 1918)...?
Need some help...noticed two (2) 1914 Navies for sale on gun-sites that say the 1914 Navy luger is 1918 chamber dated.
My question is : Were 1918 chamber dated, 1914-Navies made ? C. Kenyon (Lugers At Random) on page 156 says 1914-1918 dates are possible. J. Walter (The Luger Story) on page 143 says chamber dates of 1916 and 1917 are known, but with surving inventory info. reveal that deliveries were being made at the end of the war. M. Reese (revised edition Luger Tips) on page 46 says chamber dates from 1914-1918, with few having a 1914 or 1915 chamber date. J. Still (imperial Lugers) on page 159 only lists 1916 and 1917 chamber dates in his Table 6. On page 164 Still states "the 1914 Variation Navy Lugers have 1916 and 1917 dated chambers and short frames...". Needless to say, I cannot figure this out. I also do not have the Navy Luger book by Gortz & Walter to see what that says... |

It's called a 1914 Model. The model is referred to by collectors when a change is made. I believe the chamber date reference is a mistake and a carry over from the artillerys. The chamber is either blank, 1916, 1917, or 1918.

Is there a picture of a 1918 chamber dated Navy in any Luger reference material or book?

Johnny,
Not in any of the books I listed in my original posting. I was hoping a Forum member that might have the Navy Luger book (by Gortz/Walter) might look to see if such a photo exists... |

I believe Jan Still indicates only 1916 and 1917 chamber dates, or I am not aware of his listing on the 1915 date.

In Gortz and Walters book, it states that several thousandpistollen 1904 were issued up until October 1918 ahen Germany sued for peace. It doesn't mention when these were manufactured or what the chamber dates were.

Ralph Shattuck had 1918 Navy. It's in his current list, but it's sold. It's in excellent condition. I saw it a couple of weeks ago. Luke tried to buy it but Ralph said it was already sold.

On page 112 of Gortz and Walter they show 1918 delivery from DWM the following "Pistolen 1904":
January .... 300 February .. 2000 (these were delivered in lots of 400, 200, and 1400. March ..... 1700 (in lots of 600, 600, 200 and 300) April ........ 231 Thereafter, all the distribution to combat units were from existing stocks on hand or re-distribution of turn-ins. Gortz and Walter do not show any photographs of chamber markings for any year except for post-war 1920!!! |

Still indicates that 8000 Navy Lugers were ordered in August of 1916, and the delivery of these pistols were spread out over three years. Still writes that delivery apparently lagged production as there are no confirmed 1918 dated Navy Lugers.
