Default Grip ID Help

I recently picked up a set of replacement grips. The seller stated that they are Mauser made, 40's grips. There is a stamped M or W on the right grip panel as well as what appears to be faint WA655 Waffenamts on both grips. I was under the impression that Mauser replacement grips would have been stamped with a 42 or S/42 rather than an M. Any insight on what I have?

Thanks for the help!

Tony

eagle 655 are replacement grips also and around that time period.

the M is just an M - some kind of workers marking

My dad owned a sign company... The differences between an M and a W--considering something might be upside down--are 1) The middle "V" between the legs of an M is short, and the same structure in a W is as tall as the legs, and 2) The legs of the M are plumb, while the legs of the W have a slant. People make up all sorts of wacky fonts and styles (I can't stand dotted capital Is.) but this is the standard. Flipping one of them if you need the other will work in a pinch, of course...but it ain't Kosher.

And that is because the W is a double V.
