Default 16 inch Barrel

I recently purchase Luger from an acquaintance. Included with the pistol was an extra barrel. This barrel is a little over 16 inches long and a walnut for-end that is about 14 1/2 inches long. The barrel and wood look new. It has never been on a gun. There are no marks on the barrel and it is 9mm. I assume this is an aftermarket novelty, but I have never seen one before. Does anyone have any info on this? Thanks.

Please post pictures. Follow the guidelines shown elsewhere on this site.

Back in the 1920's, several companies were importing Lugers to the USA.

Some of them offered a variety of lengths of barrels.

Depending on several details, your gun could have originally been a Luger Carbine, with the shorter barrel swapped/added after the fact. <From photos below, this is not the case...>

In any case, pictures are pretty necessary for any kind of analysis.

Most likely the 16-inch barrel with walnut forestock is of recent manufacture. I have seen a number of them offered for sale to construct a Luger "carbine". The 16-inch barrel length makes it legal to do so, but the wooden stock attaches to the barrel, so the combined weight impairs proper functioning of the gun.

16" barrel from Numrich I believe. No markings.
Numrich also sold a crude forestock as well.

I have yet to fire it.

Check the barrel twist rate. Some of the 'modern' ones have a 16:1 whereas the original luger used an 8:1 , even in the LP08.

I am a novice when it comes to Lugers, but I'm sure this is not an original barrel. I am just curious who, why, and when these barrels were made. It does have a 1:16 twist. I do not plan on putting it on a gun. I will probability end up putting it on GB.
Ron, you are correct. The wood is screwed the the barrel.

This is the classic long barrel offered by Numrich Arms/Gun Parts Corp. several years ago. It may also have been offered by Sarco and other parts houses.

Totally impractical modification.

Berwyn, These are still listed in the Numrich catalog @$122.88 + S&H. I have a couple without the set up for the wood fore arm available in the $50 to $100 range. TH

Thanks to everyone for your help. I have recently purchased two very nice shooters. One has a four inch barrel the other is a 6 inch with a regiment number on it. Who ever refinished them did an excellent job. I think I will stop there, collector pieces are too expensive for me.
