Default Luger Logo/Proofs fill-in (white marks, straw)

I know this topic was discussed a few months ago, but wanted to bring it up again.

I know most of you all have some sort of WHITE or Strawed finish to some of the lugers' logos/manufacturing marks. Like, filled in with a chalk, or substance? Or, I noticed some guns had a 'straw' finish on the logos.

Logos equalling: DWM, S/42, byf, serial numbers, proof-marks, etc.... They are white or strawed.

How is this process done? And, I know it's not original, but it really looks good when refinished! I was wanting mine like this also. Ted will be finishing my gun sometime (grin), and maybe he does this ?

But, also curious how you do the 'white' logo fillins too. This would look good on some other guns I own. What type of substance/process is done to get that detail?

Thanks everyone!

Normally a white or gold lacquer stick is used to rub into the indentations of the logo and serial numbers. It is like a large crayon that you rub over the surface and then wipe off leaving the logo filled in. It is best used temporarily for display or photography. I have several pistols that have had the white lacquer applied 20+ years ago and it has aged to an antique white. There are white grease pencils that will give you the same effect and are more easily removed with mineral spirits. There are many opinions as to the good/bad aspects of doing this to your pistols. I am sure you will hear differing opinions. Ralph Shattuck, at http://www.worldoflugers.com sells the white lacquer sticks and I believe they are listed under accessories or misc.

I use a white china marker. These are available at office supply stores but you usually have to buy them by the box.

I have seen another collector use white liquid paper. He uses the thinner to remove it. Steve

Most any hardware store should have the lacquer sticks. The safety marking Gesichert was whited in with something on original pistols. The white lacquer stick ages to about the same color. If you decide you don't like the lacquer stick after you have applied it, a little gun oil and a toothbrush will remove it safely.

Brownells a large supplier to Gunsmiths sells an assortment of different color sticks or at least did. You can use China penculs as stated or go to a Auto Supply store and get the whiting sticks for tires.
