Lugers sighted Near Flint, MI
Forum members, Michigan folks, and Big Norm..
I finally had a chance to stop at the Williams Gunsight & Outfitters store off of I-69 near Flint Michigan today. They have a shop in front of the gunsight factory and I always intended to take a look-see. They had an assortment of lugers, artilleries, stocks, holsters, a couple DWM's, and two P-38 rigs as well. I'm still a newbie on these things, but it was the largest spread of Lugers that I have seen around my area. One of the counter men said they had purchased a 'collection' recently. They have some of the stuff listed on their web site: http://www.williamsgunsight.com On some of the other used firarms that I inquired about - they seemed flexible on the prices. Might be of interest to folks in the area... And to qualify for the Gun Show Discussion forum- There will be a Birch Run Gun & Knife Show at the Birch Run Expo Center (NHL Skate Arena) Just North of Flint, on I75 Right off Exit 136...FREE PARKING 400 to 700 tables. 517 676-4160 for more Info. I don't have any other information, or know what to expect there - does anyone else know? I just wanted to pass on these 'sightings'. Regards, Fritz. |

Fritzer,
I am glad to here there are some more Luger enthusiasts in this part of Michigan. There are two near Imlay City and a couple on the East side of Detroit. There is a guy in Flint too, but I don't know if he is a collector or a small time dealer. The best gun show for Lugers is the Novi show. I may miss the next one because there is an auction in Illinois at the same time that I MAY attend. (The jury is still out on it.) The Novi show will frequently have a lot of Lugers there. It seems to go in cycles. A good friend of mine ususally has 4-5 Lugers and I sometimes consign a few more to him. Another guy there usually has 4-5 Lugers on his table. I have been to the Birch Run Show and it seems quite small and has never had any Lugers there. I generally avoid the Doug Carl shows. They have too many brass knuckles, lamp shades and army surplus items. His gun show at the Silver Dome only had one guy selling collectors guns and he didn't have any Lugers. I have a friend at the Grand Rapids show who I might do some business with soon. He has a table near the front door with some great Lugers on display. But I think that he is there to buy fine Lugers when they walk in the door and not to sell anything. Viewing his table is worth the trip. He says that he seldom sees a Luger at the show that will make him wee-wee in his pants. I have plans to take a couple Lugers there and I hope that he will be wearing his rubber underwear. Your recommendation about Williams Gunsight sound good. I'll check it out as soon as I finish doing my income taxes. (I am almost finished...thank God!). I will check out the web site IMMEDIATELY. I also heard that a gun store in Clio has some Lugers. Drop me an email and maybe we can get together. Maybe I can help you get you started blowing a ton of money on Lugers. (Thats not really a joke) Big Norm |

Fritzer,
I just checked out the web site and it looks like it just has a catalog of generally available commercial stuff there. (No used gun info) I will look at my issue of the "Michigan Outdoors" magazine and see if there are directions and store hours for the shop. Fritzer,
I went to this shop this Monday. He has two artilleries, a 1916 mismatch and a 1917 rig. The 1916 is going for $1695 and has a mismatched toggle and locking bolt. The 1917 could be a matching gun but the guy at the counter would not allow me to field strip the gun so I can not vouch that it is matching. The holster is a 1917 Hoffman manufacturer but the embosed manufactures mark under the flap is barely legible. The holster is pretty well beat. The stock cup is an old brown mix and match. There are no shoulder straps. The stock is original and not matched to the gun. The serial number is 5414L. The shop will not separate the holster and/or stock from the Luger. Price is $2395. There was a pretty nice 41-BYF with a matching mag that I was interested in for the $1250 price. But since I was not allowed to field strip the gun, I lost interest. There were also two commercial Lugers and one of them looked pretty nice. But since I was rejected at disassembling the 41-BYF, I didn't spend any time with the commercials which a quick look told me were a bit over priced. On the way home, I dropped by Jerry Peters house and he told me that these Lugers have been for sale for a couple of months. So I assume that since the management would not allow the guns to be field stripped, Luger people just walked away. I felt that the 1916 artillery was over priced for a shooter. The 1917 artillery could be interesting at a lower price. The 1917 had original dull blue but there was a small amount of pitting. The grips had a big chip on the left hand side near the safety. The original stock was the best thing on this deal. The 41-BYF had little wear on the blue. Just a tad more than the normal holster wear around the side plate, the frame just in front of the side plate and the barrel tip. The grips looked good. The bore was good. For $1250, I would have liked to have taken a closer look. I am glad that I went because I had never been to this shop before and always wanted to see it. But I probably won't go back. Big Norm |
