Interesting markings/EG VOPO Lugers
Saw this on two Erfurt frames and an accompanying VOPO Inspector stamp as well. This stamp is on the flat side of the frame and is in a sideways configuration (lazy...lazy.....lazy) Top one seems to be Crown over an Eagle (Constanzo WOL #
287) which is also 1950 East German People Military final proof, second one is crown over U which is similar to Mauser Commercial but I think this one is proof #161 (WOL) and represents 1950 East German Suhl Inpection proof???

Thor, according to the "Standard Directory of Proof Marks", the eagle is a post-1950 Suhl final proof (doesn't mention it being military) and the C/U is a post-1950 Suhl Inspection mark. The book does state that after proof firing, a visual inspection is performed.

I assume this is a REWORK marking. I do believe these were Erfurt frames, but I would have to go look again. None of these frames were made in the 50s were they? <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" />

East German law (again, according to the book I've already quoted) required proofing again if certain things were done to an existing gun. I've read that the East Germans did manufacture Luger frames but I've never seen one. Those I've read about would never be mistaken for a DWM or Erfurt produced gun as the workmanship is said to be very crude and the lanyard loop wasn't installed. I find the stamps on your pistols to be very interesting and of all the E. German reworks I've examined, none have had them. A good find for you, I'd say. |

Doubs; the East Germans did make frames (and whole pistols). Look under post WW11 Lugers and you will find a discussion there.
