Jerry, I am always amazed at why certain items go for big bucks on e-bay, while a like item just sits there...

No, i replied then clicked. Probably a mistake on the sellers part, he meant $10.00 and forgot the decimel point, then went back and changed it,

GW, you just copy and paste it in the reply box, or you can write it, such as www.lugerforum.com (make sure you do not place any period or other letter after the .com, or it will think it is part of the URL / link.

Thank you Ed. I tried, but had a problem. If you think the links worth posting (for a laugh). I still think this guy fell as he was gently escorted away. I tried to joke, but there really is no humour in this example of human....I will let it go and hit the books.

Guys,

All kidding aside, I actually collect Belt's and Belt buckles.

The photo is of an SS Officer Brocade belt and buckle with the "SS hologram" stiched on the belt. You can see it on the upper belt but not on the lower, unless you move the belt from side to side. (Of course not really a hollogram as we know it but superb worksmenship) worth about $900.00, if you can find one.

The left belt buckle is a Weimer era volunteer fire department enlisted buckle, the legend translates to "Defend Your Neighbors Honor God".

The other buckle is an enlisted Fire police buckle worn till about 1936 from Rheinland.

Very cool Mark! Now these have some value as historic artifacts... I imagine quite rare too. I have never seen the fire buckle.. I look at them all the time on eBay, Really spectacular SS belt and buckle. Jerry Burney

Nice Mark!

Could you start another thread and include some of your collection? (Include some more Weimar if you can, especially Police!)

Thanks guy's!

I really like collecting buckles, however the fakes are getting better and have more distribution at the gun shows I've been to recently. Many years ago you could tell a fake buckle by just turning it over and looking at the lock nut attaching the face plate. Now the fakers are taking real WWII buckles, removing a common face plate and attaching the repro of the rare buckle with the correct attachment method ... so be carefull out there. Although I doubt a novice would spend a grand for a belt buckle or brocade without knowing what they are looking at!

However, the repro's of common buckles that sell for $100.00 or under (as originals) are also there

I'll post more photo's when I get a chance to take better pictures, my collection of German buckles is very extensive running from the mid 1800's through WWII. I have many fire police buckles from Hamburg, Berlin, Westfalen, Hessen, Sachsen, Hannover and Braunschweig

Here is a picture of two trade buckles I am very fond of.... and hard to find!

The top buckle is an original night watchman, this buckle is faked very often at gun shows. The second buckle is the chimney sweep trade union

Thank you Mark! I have never seen a trade buckle before or was even aware that such a thing existed. Thank you for the lesson, I will try to be more observant at gun shows in the future. I don't suppose there was a buckle for a carpenter, or "Tischlermeister" (my trade in a much earlier former life)?

Ron,

The Germans had buckles for all the trades in society. The early 30's society was morphed from boy scouts to German Youth to Hitler youth. Here are a few buckles from the 1800's for the trades. The first few are the Mason trade and the others are for a Carpenter.

Many more exist from the Nazi era including Butcher and even civilian band members!

Outstanding! Thanks a ton! I will have to be particularly alert in the future to see if I can locate a carpenter buckle. I am guessing that the bottom two buckles are for coopers because of the barrels. I would imagine that in a country of beer and wine, the coopers were quite a popular trade group.

Ron,

Most of the buckles I have seen at gun shows are "bring backs" from GI's. The old buckles and trade buckles are from dealers in Europe I have been in touch with over the years. A well known author and dealer in Belgium sold me the "old" trade union buckles.

A great book is by John R. Angolia, Belt Buckles & Brocades of the THIRD REICH, published by R. James Bender Publishing... (408) 225-5777. (John has many other books on uniforms, etc.... many of you may be familiar with his work)

John in a private e-mail told me he had to cut the size of the book down because of publishing reasons. It is hard cover and 655 pages... very informative, the chapters on repros and fakes are invaluable!! Many color photos of the brocades.... and he with authograph a copy at no charge!!!

My first interest in belt buckles was with a soft cover book (now out of print) by Thomas Reid and John Mauer entitled "German Belt Buckles 1919-1945" .. revised edition from 1979. (Published by Lancer Militaria in Houston ... and I bought my first few buckles from them) It has drawings of the buckles and is still very current, just wish I had more money in those days.............

Good Hunting!!!

Mark

P.S. Unlike the Lugers, P38's and other guns we love.... there are no import markings on belt buckles nor any restrictions for an import permit or marking!! Just have the shipment insured and tracked also, get ready for the call to customs (where is my shipment?) ... I once had a custom official help me with what was on the import declaration as they did not know what a "tab" was.... so we changed it to a "piece of cowhide leather" attached to the buckle ... the next day I got my buckles .... no BS !!
