1906 at local store

This M1906 came into a local gunshop on consignment, they gave me the opportunity to examine and photograph the pistol. It's a new number for the Commercial database.

1906 American Eagle Lugers far outnumber 1906 Commercials (yeah, I know, they are both commercial) on this side of the puddle, so a regular commercial is a relatively scarce version here in the US. That is a really nice example. Notice that it is not stamped GERMANY, so it is a bring-back rather than an import.

I am fairly certain this is refinished. There appears to be no halo around the barrel proofs or the barrel witness mark; the face of the sideplate looks re-surfaced; the center toggle retaining pin is smooth and bright; the routed safety area is questionable. The photos are past the limit for making definitive assessment. If it is refinished, it is a very nice job.

I can try and get a better image on the barrel proofs next week. I had a question myself on the possibility of a refinish job. There is a "bruise" (for lack of a better term) on the front of the trigger guard which I question. As nice as the gun is, I can't see DWM allowing that to pass final QC. I just haven't seen that many early guns to make a final determination.

What a beautiful piece! I'm glad I didn't find it; or I'd have my calculator out with my credit cards wrangling out a way to pay for it, and I'm still paying off an artillery I bought...Last year!

I was able to take some more pics of the pistol. There are several of the underside of the barrel showing the BUG proofs and the caliber diameter markings. The "bruise" is just the away the light looks in the picture. I gave close examination to the front of the trigger guard and I see no marks that indicate a refinish. There are no halo's on the BUG proofs, some of the proofing is actually polished off.

This description of the markings would make me think the pistol was refinished.
Dwight already mentioned the incomplete polishing of the safety "flag" area.

A nice job if it is refinished, and not done "yesterday"- but I believe it was refinished.

I think the subject of this thread is refinished. I also think that $5k can be better spent. JMHO.

I think there is some cause for doubt as to the originality of the finish of that pistol, I'm afraid it could be refinished.
