Post 1921 DWM Baby Luger

Just finished the metal prep on this one. It will go to the engraver who has a plan to do a full engraving on it. I will do the final rust blue/fire blue/strawing on it when it returns. I have NO idea what is planned for the engraving embelishments. 2 & 5/8" 9mm Barrel. Built by Neil Keller (Hub) and final grips will be by Hugh Clark.

Got this note from the above engraver today that will be cutting on the baby Luger!
"I'm engraving the APG Presentation gun for President George W. Bush. " What the heck is APG?

Ted...Could it be something along the lines of the "American Pistolsmiths Guild?"

I am trying to give the engraver some ideas on the Luger engraving without getting in his way. If you have any pictures of Engraved Lugers please either send me a link to the picture or email it to me at Thor340@aol.com ! I already have a couple from Ralph's place and the one from Lugers at Random (LAR)(1920 Commercial). I have Still's books and LAR and Harry Jones Luger Variations book, MultiNational Pistol. I dont have Benders book. I also dont have a real clear picture of the Goehring Luger. Thanks!

Hi Ted! Looks nice! What gives the finished unit that tan color??? is that some type of metal prep, like bead blasting..or chemical prep?? Or is it just the way the light hits it?? Looks nice just like it is! Best to you, til...lat'r...GT

Just the light GT, it is oiled white steel. RockinWR, that was the Goehring Luger I was referring to in my post. I think that is a slightly better pic than the one I have, thanks.

The APG does stand for American Pistolsmiths Guild and yes the engraver doing the Baby Luger is engraving a Presention 1911 for the present President, G.W. Bush. I was lucky enough to be selected as on of the 6 contributing pistolsmiths on this project and yes it was nerve racking as well as rewarding.
The Baby that Thor is finishing will be the APG's raffle gun for 2005 and and the raffle tickets will be available after the NRA show in April if any of the Forum members are interested. Will post the info on the forum if that is permissable.

Quite permissible I also request that you do a proper photo essay on the completed gun for permanent display in the gallery.

I am currently doing some experiments on rust bluing over some gold inlayed steel. The engraver, Brian Powley sent me a steel plate with a gold inlayed DUCK on it. So far so good. The gold has to be lightly hammered into the recess so it might mar the bluing up so after bluing makes sense. QUACK!!!!!!!!

I was in Texas recently and had the oportunity to meet with Hugh and we picked out a set of grips for the Baby. It should be a real choice addition to anybody's collection and as for myself I have started on a mate to it. Of course it will be engraved slightly different to assure the 1st one is one of a kind. BTW, Hugh looks just like his picture and what a great couple he and his wife are.

When I did some research into the topic a year or so ago I was informed by an engraver that that was how it was done--gold first, then blue.

Thumbs up

We really enjoyed the visit with Neil and His wife. Too bad we didn't have more time. I wouldn't be surprised if there isn't a second 22/30 caliber Luger just around the corner!!

In the current American Handgunner issue, there is a two page article highlighting the engraved 2004 APG raffle gun of the year. This is a beautiful Browning High Power.

Just to let everyone know, Brian Powley is currently engraving and doing some gold inlay on this pretty little Luger. I am thinking it may be completely finished by end of July-mid August of this year. This is the 2005 APG Raffle gun that will be featured in the American Handgunner Magazine sometime next spring.

Ted, Please don't call these cut down PO8s a M1921. They were much smaller and only 2 each were made in 32acp and 380. If you want to see some excellent examples of original prewar engraving I would recommend Rankin's "Walther" book Vol 2. In recognition of "Texas Hugh's" contribution for another Texan, I'd recommend engraving an Armidillo rather than a duck. Th

The chamber date is 1921, its a small Luger, yes I know the real babys are 32 and 380 but that's what Neil calls them so it seems fitting to call them that. Hugh calls them that, Tom Armstrong calls them that, I call them that. The jest of your post is really lost on me Tom.

Ted, I'm serious about the Armadillo engraving, no joke. GHWB is probably a down home roadkill shooter, like some of the other Texans on this forum. TH
