In-Fill Of Paint On Numbers/Proofs ?
For a collector-valued Luger, does it distract from the gun's value if the stamped serial numbers, logos, and proof marks are in-filled with highlighting paint ?
Or is this in-fill a washable, temporary paint that is just done for photography and/or display purposes ? |

Re: In-Fill Of Paint On Numbers/Proofs ?
Usually the pictures you see are of washable material that comes off. It would not be benificial for value if it didn't.

White filler
It is 'White china marker' or similar names...comes from the local stationary store...and is EASILY removed with Acetone [AKA fingernail polish remover]
It makes display and photography easier.. Orv Reichert |

Re: White filler
White lacquer stick is easily applied and comes off with gun oil and a toothbrush. White lacquer sticks are sold by Brownells, and you should be able to find it at your local hardware store.

Re: In-Fill Of Paint On Numbers/Proofs ?
Pete,
The in-fill of the stampings do not detract from the value of a pistol at all. Some folks don't like it and some do. I prefer to add the "White China Marker" from the stationary stores to my pistols as it is VERY easy to remove as Orv stated, and the pencil is cheap. I do it so I can read the stamps easier and it makes photographing the stamps easy to read. Marvin |

white letters/marks
I use "MEAN STREAK' made by Sanford Corp. It is a lacquer stick and hardens well but is easily removed.
I have also used the 'gold inlay' which is a gold powder and you mix it with clear fingernail polish...it looks really 'classy'!! Orv |

Gold
I used it to fill in like Thor did on the photo he posted [see attached] This stuff is sold as BONANZA BRUSHING INLAY by Brownells. I think looks great?
Great job by Thor on the PPK!! [Also, of course, I do my nails with it!] Orv http://boards.rennlist.com/upload/Thors2PPK.jpg |

Thanks Orv, I already have "several" people discussing purchasing it. I wanted to take it to WOL and show it first!!! ~Thor~

More Gold
I use a Metallic Gold pen to fill in the markings. It is called Pen Touch Gold, extra fine point (0.7mm). They are available at most stationary or craft stores for about $3.95 or so and work really well. They are meant to sign Xmas cards and the like to make your signature 'fancy'. Takes a little practice to find the time needed to let it dry ehnough to wipe off the excess without also pulling the filler out of the markings then just use some super fine steel wool (0000) to remove the rest from the surface. Then apply a good oil lightly to the area.
