Post 1908 Navy on Gunbroker

Here is a 1908 navy Luger that I just saw on Gunbroker. This has got to be to worse job of buffing that I have ever seen on any Luger. Parents, don't let your children see this mess. This weapon has to be rated triple X or something to indicate the violence that was done to it.

I spoke to thor earlier today and he assures me he could make a silk purse out of this sow's ear. I have a couple of his re works and can attest to his skill. I saw that thing and thought it was buffed beyond repair and salt blue (black) to the point of being an expensive trinket, but if Ted can spruce her up, I may want to have him take a whack at it. With the idea of a mandatory Thor refinish in mind, how much do you think the old girl would be worth as it sits?

If I had all the money I've spent on guns and cars, I'd probably spend it on guns and cars!

Tim,
If you were to take this on as a project, I believe you would spend more in restoration than it would be worth as an original. The only difference is you would spend it gradually over time. And when you were done, you would still have a restored gun which would be worth about what an un-futzed gun in 60% would bring.

That's just the way the market works.

Save your money and then buy the *absolute best* you can find. You can always get more money, but really great Lugers only show up when their previous caretakers have an appointment with the man in the long nightshirt.

My zwei pfennigs,

Tom A.

Gentlemen
I'm just a dumb farmboy from South Dakota so I asked someone who is a lot smarter than me. The serial number given by the seller is
Ref: I have been told not to give out the whole number via the net
however it is four digits starting with 14xx if you have any questions
send me your phone number and I will call you..

Is this OK: I was told no!

I could not agree with Tom more. I definately would not want to degrade Thors work, but this gun does not look like it would even make a good parts gun. The time and money that would be needed to make it look good just would not be worth it. All you would have is a pretty shooter. Even then, I would worry about the integrity of the metal. This thing has some pretty deep buffing done on it.

Well heck, I hate to think that Luger will have to look like that the rest of its life!!
If its a real bad example, its too bad to restore!
If its a real nice example, its too nice to restore! Interesting! If it is a Navy."Das ist Verboten!!! Ja?" lol!! See, I dont even have a gut Navy Picture!

I think it is more for dealers than collectors, i.e. a dealer shows number 3456a and a guy buys it, takes his mismatched part off and replaces it with the good part from the dealer, returns the gun and now has a non-mismatch and the dealer was stuck...

I don't know how often this has actually happened, but once would be enough to make a dealer leery.

I noticed no reserve and someone has bid $1000. Perhaps I will get to restore it for someone!

Thor,
I agree with you. I wonder what this individual will be selling on GunBroker in the near future to recapture his expenses. The only thing worse than this gun are its pictures. These pictures are as bad as the pictures that he usually has on GunBroker for his stuff. So its hard to tell what he will be able to part off of it. Personally, I don't think that he will be able to recoup his expenses. Just my opinion.

In its next incarnation it will have three matching numbered magazines.

Hey George,
you forgot about the "original" post war navy holster! I believe that this individual has one like that on GunBroker now.
