Default Help with a Luger ID

I am trying to learn how to correctly ID Lugers with the help of "Lugers at Random" There are so many classes!: on Gun Broker #145504332 ( I wish to knew how to do a direct link) there is a Banner Mauser dated 1939. Would that be a 1934 Mauser German Contract (pg 282), or 1934 Mauser,Dated Contract/Commercial(pg 284)? or maybe classed as something else? It has no sear safety as on pg. 284, but it has a blued trigger ( or looks to be blued) as on pg.282. Boy this gets tough. Any thoughts to the correct class?
Thanks,Bill

Bill,

It's a 1939 Mauser "Banner". So named for the Mauser logo on the toggle.

This particular Luger ,1939 Banner with C/U proof, SN 8228v falls into the Swiss and Commercial contract range. According to Jan Still's "Third Reich Lugers" there were only 60 produced. This information may be dated, since he published T.R.L. other information may have surfaced.

Joop van de Kant has been doing extensive studies of the Mauser Lugers for a new book he is working on. He could give you more details. He can be reached through Jan Still's Central Powers Pistols forum. Do a search under his full name.

Boy! I see I need a few more Luger books. Amazing what the proofs and s/n can tell you about Lugers that look almost the same on the surface. If correct, it looks if only 60 were made, it would be a rare one to have in one's collection.
Thank you Ron for your research.

Bill,

The best advice that is offered by experienced collectors is to spend the price of a nice Luger on the best books available, and study.

It will be much less expensive in the long run. It can be a great investment / hobby, but it can get ugly in a hurry if you don't know what you are looking at. We've all been there once or twice.

Ron

There are so many variations in models, proof marks, s/n ranges, that unless one is a advanced collector, as most of the forum members are, I feel I need to make a small pocket size booklet with much of this info so I will be more informed at shows/auctions. Kind of wish there was a knowledgeable collector here in New Hampshire that could spare so time.
Thanks,Bill

The best and recommended thing to do is to determine the era that you are interested in. Pre - WWI, Imperial, Weimar or Third Reich Mausers, and concentrate on that variation. Once you have the basics down, then you can branch your interests to other variations. It's nearly impossible to learn them all at once.
