Post Server Update...

Yesterday afternoon - one of the network cards in this server (there are bunches of servers, but only the Forum server was effected) went "belly up", - and I couldn't get one of the new replacements to "bind". So - rather then fight an old version of Linux - hell - I just reinstalled the whole damn thing from the ground up with another current version (uses the latest and greatest - which is a PIA to set up/configure). Sorry for the interuption - but we were live at 5AM my time - and then at 6:30 - had to take it down - and rebuild this Forum database.

Looks like we are back - however, I will have to take it down a little later to move some more files across - but it should be only a short "intermission"...

In the meantime - please know - I am aware that the "photo upload" and the "Spell Check" do not work. The Photo upload, I hope to write a new PHP script which will allow folks to upload more then one file at a time. The Spelling Checker - heck - I dunno - I have to install PSPELL and config the Apache server with the mod_speling.so module, and that may take some time...

Anyway - sorry for the interuption through last evening and through the night.

Best to all..!

- John

Update......

I'll be transferring some files to this server between 5PM and 7PM EST this evening - so you might notice the Forums are online/offline/online/off.. - Well you get the idea....

Anyway - as well - through the evening tonight, I'll also be re-indexing the Search Database - so at times, the server might appear "jerky" (well - not the posts, but the response times <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> )...

Have a great evening!

Hey Ron...

Thanks....

OK - the server should be up for the rest of the night - as I just completed the transfer... But, replies might be "ad hoc" and a little "jumpy", as one of the databases refreshes, as it updates posts/threads "on the fly" from my other Forums - which have almost a million messages to reindex.

About the smoke in the net card.. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> Yea - I was "smokin' " at about 1 AM last night - when I figured it was better just to upgrade/re-install....

Best to you - and my thanks for all, Ron...!

"Ain't technology wonderful. Shouldn't have let the smoke out of that network card."

Arent you guys aware that cans of replacement smoke are available from your local electronics store? It is, however, tricky to reload the smoke into the components as they are quite small, and you know how smoke is. Its hard to get it to go where you want. Anyway, I just thought I might be able to help.

Actually, John might be able to load more smoke from the hard drive if he types the proper command line. If its a unix based machine, I believe he can go to the /ect/system/hardware/smoke file. He can then type [more smoke]. If this doesnt work, he will have to use the vi editor tool and increase the ammount of smoke in that file.

Let the poor guy sleep fellas... or the next time the smoke escapes there won't be anyone to help us.

and Tom A. --- your experiences with spell check and photo upload are not typical... there is something really goofy about your connection to the internet that probably won't get resolved until you return to the 'burbs in Virginia where I can have your full attention for some adjustments... I just haven't figured out yet if it is the computer that needs adjustments or the operator...

Hi guys....

The photo upload is back. I changed the links to the left to reflect the change. You may have to "refresh" your browser and update your bookmarks if you had the previous page "saved". As well - there is an auto redirect on the old page.

Also - I scripted PHP rather then programming a CGI file - which is much cleaner. As well, there are some new changes:

- If you get an error uploading - your will see an Error Message describing what the error is (file size or wrong file type or etc...) So - you can troubleshoot uploading a little better...

After an "upload" - I added a form, that you'll see under you uploaded picture - to upload anther pic. No swaping back and forth between forms... It all takes place from the same screen.

If you "upload" a picture like my picture of my luger.jpg - it will automatically parse it for you to mypictureofmyluger.jpg.

If you upload a picture with the SAME name as a previous one - or a name that has been used, I'll automatically change it for you as well - so in the example above, if you uploaded the same picture twice, the second pic would be called mypictureofmyluger_1.jpg. You'll be informed of the name change and the link that you copy will reflect the updated name....

Enjoy....

Hey Frank

You and the very few others who have asked to assist with the financial operation of this Forum are simply outstanding.... My warmest thanks for your offer...

If you would like, please send any contribution to
John Dunkle
PO Box 111

All I can offer in return is a nifty "Lugerforum Patron" under your SIG, and that this site will stay on-line and running for quite some time. In the future - I may add some areas that are for those who support this site directly - just some enhancements and a few "features".

But honestly - when someone steps forward in public or private - and asks what they can do to assist, I'm a little speechless and overwhelmed.

My thanks for that â?? and your offer and your post.

Itâ??s more appreciated then many may realizeâ?¦.

John,

My contribution (other than the humor I unwittingly provide with my technical "expertise"???) is enroute.

As mine will be on Friday and I highly suggest, that those who enjoy this forum as much as I do, consider a worthwhile contribution.

Hey Guys..!

My thanks... Your support and comments are more appreciated then you know. As you can tell - I think I finally have this server stabilized after today. Overall, it appears to be faster then the previous one - and I think I also have the issues solved for the P38 and PPK forums. They seem to have held together great today....

Anyway - I'm going to throw this out for comments - and I'll ask for your candid replies....

I'm wrestling with doing an entire "upgrade" on the overall Lugerforum site - not just the pages, but rather some unique "features" in the overall technology and features available.

I won't get into specifics yet - but for any websites you visit often (no they don't have to be firearms related) - can you tell me what you like for features? There is an astounding array of things that can be done with technology - so I'd really appreciate any suggestions. In the back - yes, I'm working on some new areas - in hope to benefit all of the folks here, and for the first time Lugerforum visitor. Frankly - some of the ideas are rather cool...

Again, my thanks to all of you.
