Default New acquisition 1906 Navy

On the strap are the unit markings: L.T.D. I don't have a listing of the units with me.
Just curious, what does it stand for?
thanks
Jack

Hi Jack, That unit mark is almost certainly I.T.D., (1st Torpedo Division). These were the crews who manned torpedo boats.
Do I have your new 1906 on the Navy List? If not, please email me with the serial number and the full unit mark.
Regards, Norm

Default right on.

Norm:
You are probably right as usual.
The side of that character is not really complete, so it can be looked at as a couple of different things. I can handle I.T.D.
e-mail sent.
thanks
Jack

Default Condition of the Navy

There are some signs of touching up or dressing up of the bluing: the barrel and toggle train are somewhat too nice looking so as not to match the entire gun. Plus someone who assisted in pricing the gun, for the seller, noted some hint of bluing touch up. The bluing appears to be a really good job. I wonder if anyone on this forum might have done it. The seller was from the Los Angeles area. Also, one grip is not a match. At first glance it appears to match but an 0 is really a 9. The number is 42XX; first issue, altered, I.T.D. 51 - unit number.

What affect are the bluing and number being off on the FMV?? Any comments??
I expect to post some pictures in a short while.

Default Pics of Navy

Here she is. She may not be beautiful but she is pretty; and she's all mine. Got her from Turners. They got 15 Lugers about a month ago. What an ordeal - purchasing thru a Calif. company. Anyone wants to hear the gory details, let me know.
She is still in the process of getting cleaned up. Yep, you guessed it: a Christmas present, from my honey. But I agreed to check the gun out and then it becomes a present, under the tree, until gift exchange time.

I have to say that you have one sweet "honey"!!! That is a great Christmas gift, and I am sure that you are proud of it for many reasons. I have a serious LUST for a Navy, but to date am still Navyless.

O.K. guys, I need some of you to step up to the plate and help with the questions in Item # 4. The issues with the bluing, grip number off by 9 digits and also the magazine has faint numbers that aren't correct. Things to be concerned about?? I remember some comments along those lines that stated some leeway should be considered since we are talking about Navy's and what they have been through and how rare they are, etc.

Cap
I am not a Navy expert so hope others will speak up. The one grip would not bother me. The rebluing should have an effect on the price? If you got it for a fair price and your happy where's the problem? I have seen very few Navy's for sale over the years. I'm sure they are out there but very limited quantities. Your pictures are to dark for me to tell much on the finish. Enjoy. Bill

Like I've said, you can literally smell cold bluing...

That is a really good looking gun. As Bill said, a mis-matched grip has never bothered me much (they broke and got replaced...I feel the same way about firing pins). I rather doubt that just the barrel and toggle train were refinished and the rest of the gun left as is. For some reason, probably due to the metallurgy, the bluing on the toggles and barrel seems to hold up better.

Default "very interesting" as Padre Dan (Arty Johnson) would say

This is my first Navy. Oh so many things to be concerned about. It's a very interesting piece of information. I never heard anyone make that observation available to us newerbies.
It was advertised as numbers matching.
Sure makes me feel better. I can sleep safely now - my National Guard is. Just trying to be funny. No disrespect intended. I'm a Vet and I value them immensely.
On Veteran's Day, I took some of my WWII stuff to the VFW for display. After the parade and a Vet's funeral. They met for dinner. Quite a few of the persons there hadn't seen any of those weapons - up close and personal. Even the women had an appreciation for the items. Some said they wouldn't even take one look but eventually most of them went by to take a gander.
thanks'Jack

Hi Jack, If you can post a photo like the views shown below, we should be able to tell if your gun has been re-blued. I wouldn't expect barrel serial halos on a no suffix 1906 Navy like yours, but the receiver rails should be "in the white". The first photo shows a gun with original finish, the second, one that has been re-blued (among other things).

I got what I hope is a good shot. On a rainy day I got a few rays of sunshine at noon. So here goes.

Hi Jack, Well the receiver looks righteous, and it's difficult to believe that someone would refinish the barrel without touching the receiver. Just to make sure though, try to take a sharp, clear photo of the top half of the gun showing the barrel, toggle train and rear sight extended to the 200m position.
Best regards, Norm

Default new pics

It's raining cats and dogs here and dark; so I had to move indoors and try to rig up some powerful lights and not have glare. Here they are, we shall see.

Hi Jack, I wish we had better photos to work with. Although the toggle train appear noticeably darker than the rest of the pistol, it doesn't look like it's been buffed, and I think the small vertical pin in the left toggle is still in the white, as it should be. Do all the serials match? The breech block is numbered on it's left side, and the middle toggle underneath in the recess.

Jack, here's a suggestion for the pics. The gun is blurry and the base of the display stand is in sharp focus, so we need to work on focusing on the gun. This is a digital camera, right? Try making sure it's in macro mode, the flower as opposed to the group of people. You should be able to fill the entire frame of the pic with the top of the gun, all in focus. The automatic focus function of the camera may also be to blame. There are a few ways auto focus is done, averaged, center-weighted, and spot. It may be that the auto focus is picking up more background than gun, and focusing on that, in which case getting in closer will help.
But how, you say, do I prevent my shadow from interfering if I get in close? If you're using strong lights, have one on each side, each at 45 degrees from the object, and from the line between it and you. This also helps eliminate glare in that the strong light in this setup generally bounces over to the other side of a flat surface, instead of back at the camera. Rounded surfaces will have a highlight here and there, but you'll be able to move the lights around and adjust where this occurs. Set up so that what you want to see is visible, and you are comfortable, then move in the lights. I hope this helps!

D.

Norm:

Yes, the serials all match and appear to be in the proper places. That toggle pin is in the white.
