We live in the foothills above Boulder, Colorado, an area frequently ravaged by destructive wildfires. As we were about to leave on an overseas three week trip, I thought it would be prudent to move part of my Luger collection (the Imperial Navy part) to a refuge safe from fire. I put the guns in a gun case and deposited them in a storage unit at the bottom of our hill, which I rented for a month. Imagine my dismay when I heard about the rain storm and flooding, on a biblical scale, which had killed nine people and swept away countless homes, bridges and highways. The area at the bottom of my hill was described on CNN as resembling a large lake. The storage company did not respond to my frantic phone calls and emails, no surprise really as all roads were closed except for emergency vehicles. We got back late on Saturday night, and when I went to the storage complex the next morning I was more than relieved to find that, although there had been some damage, my unit was high and dry. Truly, the Luger Gods had smiled on me!

Had that happened to me, I would have had an ulcer the size of a baseball by the time I got home. So glad to hear that the "kids" are o.k.

Norm, that is phenomenal news. I sometimes travel overseas, and know the anxiety involved with leaving things at home. Unfortunately it can become the dominant experience of the trip when problems start appearing on the newscasts.

I started using the silicone impregnated socks for storage of my firearms a couple of years ago after seeing some of the write ups on their effectiveness in flood and fires. I imagine that you could use spray silicone to saturate regular socks and achieve the same results.

The "Pelican" brand cases offer versions with an "O" ring seal that are waterproof. I'm starting to consider the wisdom of getting some of them... They would melt in a fire, but might be a good alternative.

Again, I'm so happy to hear that everything worked out OK. Now, how was the vacation otherwise?

Thanks for sharing the good news, had that happened to me, I think I would have preferred to go back home earlier.

Hi Sergio, I considered cutting our trip short, but it would have been too complicated and the roads in Boulder were impassable anyway. Instead, I drank heavily.

I saw a few guns that came out of New Orleans after hurricane Katrina. It nearly brought tears to my eyes. My first thought was that a 5 cent Zip Lock bag would have prevented it.
One of my old bosses used to say... "If my foresight was as good as my hindsight I'd be a damnsight better".
Glad to see yours were high and dry.

I can't tell you how happy I am for you. When you mentioned Bolder before I was concerned because of the damage done (I live in Colorado Springs).

I did the same thing you did with renting a storage area because of fires. However I still keep my best stuff in a Bank safety deposit box.

I was not prepared last year when we had to evacuate because of the Waldo Canyon Fire.

Darn glad your home safe and your babies are safe.
