Glaukonit

This term was directly related to Krieghoff WWII firearms. Any guesses?

Sure...

How about a code name (it's contained in hundreds of Nazi period documents during that era in time)....

BTW: Any guesses as to how that code came to being - and why???

Haven't a clue, John D. Can you enlighted us much less knowledgable than you regarding HK facts? I've already learned so much from you so far that you only whetted my appetite for more HK stuff.

Hi Doc, RK, Peter..!

Actually - the answer is kind of simple... First - there were "code words" for designated safe or "secret" areas within Germany - tunnels, factories, quarries, bunkers, mines - I believe even some cellars in breweries were designated as such. Krieghoff, Carl Zeiss, BMW, Dornier - and many suppliers facilities & their hidden locations were given these secret codes. These "code names" should not to be confused with "manufacturer codes" such as "fzs" or "byf", etc...

Anyway, many of these code words were developed from the local geological or countryside attributes. For Krieghoff specifically - you'd need to know a little about the surrounding area and it's history. So.....

Suhl was one of the primary firearms manufacturing areas for Germany going back as far as mid-1600s, I believe. Primarily, is was due to the the local geology being rich in Iron - so iron mining in that area was prevalent (actually - mining in that area continued even through the 1930s and 40s). I also believe, there were several foundries - most notably in surrounding towns, such as Vesser, where the iron would be forged and supplied to the local gun manufacturers in Suhl.

As Peter correctly notes - the chemical composition of "glaukonit" is iron rich (highly concentrated with Fe), which gives Glaukonit it's greenish tint.

Anyway - maybe RK and Peter will add what they found, which may provide even more insight...

BTW.. Great thread RK! And Peter, my thanks for adding the post about the chemical properties and your offer to assist with his translation!!!

Good morning Randall,

how are you doing at this early morning. Here it is actually two hours
past noon.

What you have found is a list or data bank for so called treasure
searchers (is it understood?)and it provides all the code names of
WWII secret places, mostly subterranean, which are used by the
Third Reich for secret manufacturing and/or storage.
In this case, GLAUKONIT indeed is the code name of an old mine near
SUHL, a town in East Germany, and used by KRIEGHOFF Waffenfabrik.
Whether for manufacturing or storage is not known.

"Stollen" means part of the mine.

If stored underground too long, I sure that most lugers would be found with "Glauk" (Gunk) on it. TH

Heh..!!!

Also, RK....

Any chance you can post that document??? If you can scan it in, I'll help you post it..??

Hi friends,
following a brief translation of the preface of the data bank provided by rk.

This table has been compiled especially for treasure detectors and does not contain either tunnels, tank farm or other overground secret objects. The author wants to draw special attention onto the condition of the objects as well as onto their accessibility. The reader is asked to provide information about other objects of this kind to make sure this list becomes continuously better.
I think it needs not to be mentioned that the search and can be very dangerous (Collapses, explosives, arms, etc.). Therefore consider all safty precautions and keep the laws.
Wish a lot of fun during the (worthwhile) search.
In case you know further objects, please let us know. The details will be incorporated in the list immediately.

most cordially
Henry Hatt

Hello Peter,

Thank you so much for the translation!!! Of course, now I want to go visit those areas Also - I want to find the secret areas that are not documented - yet. Maybe my crate of new WW2 Lugers is waiting for me in an undiscovered tunnel..!!

My best to you - and our thanks again for taking the time to translate that page!

John D., so there definitely were secret tunnels, these tunnels were sealed at the end of/during WWII, most likely weren't emptied before being closed, I'd say there is a very good chance there is a crate of new Lugers somewhere.
