Cheap Sight Adjustment tool and Holster Question?

1) Is there a source for a cheap repro sight adjustment tool? It will probably only be used once is why I am looking for cheap

2) Are the Artillery Luger holsters that SARCO sells made reasonably well?

Is the Winchester 124gr NATO ammo, Q4318, too hot for a 1917 Luger?

I haven't shot the pistol in a while and when I did I used the Winchester white box 115gr but haven't bought any in years and now my 9mm stock is all NATO spec 124gr.

I believe that you will find that most/all of the folks on this forum will suggest that you use only std. velocity 115-124gr FMJ cartridges in your Luger.....i.e. WWB, S&B, PMC, etc.

Nick, check eBay for a listing that bundles an Artillery sight adjusting tool with a pin punch. The seller is one avoided by many, but his price for this lot seems not too bad. If you're in a pinch and just need to use something once, get a hex drive snake-eye bit. Many comprehensive gunsmiths' screwdriver sets have them.

I can't say about the Sarco holsters because I've never seen one personally. On the website, they look pretty good to me, for the price.

The original P.08 used a 124 gr. truncated cone projectile, and your pistol should deal with it fine if it's the White Box.

Hi,

The original German Military loading was a 123 grain bullet at 1,076 fps.

9mm NATO is a 121 grain bullet loaded almost 20% hotter at 1,260 fps.

To avoid damaging your Luger, you should avoid NATO strength ammo.

Standard velocity Winchester White Box (typically marked 9mm Luger or Parabellum)should work just fine for you.

It has been rumored that in a pinch I have used 2 sharp nails clamped in the tip of a vice-grip tool to adjust the Artillery sights. But unless anyone has pictures to back up this baseless lie, I vehemently deny it...

Years ago I used two pieces of what I was told was piano wire ( the wire used to make the darts for the blowguns advertised in the outdoor magazines in the 70s ) clamped in a vise-grip but was hoping for a cheap tool designed for the job.

I still have a couple of the darts from my youth and might have to go that route again.

Mills, I've found that the pins in the repro fine tune sight tools will pull out of shaft even with moderate pressure. I perfer one that I made by milling out the blade of a wide jeweler's screw driver. TH

After going to your link I realized I had a set of bits that has those in it. Unfortunately, for some odd reason #6 has the thin pointy prongs that I need but the #4 is much wider.

I am going to order one of those and see how it works.

Couple of hours to put together..$15 an hour, Glue..couple of bucks. Cartridge case, found & free..paper clit too, Might get by for next to nothing but time! Ingenuity and improvization..gotta love it.

Always good to see folks thinking and doing. Nice idea on the HMR.

Guess one could entertain using piano wire(?) and a bit of O-1 steel to make up an adjustment driver. Materials and labor (almost free) are cheap enough, but the machine support is fairly costly, at least once anyway. Lots of ways I reckon to approach any problem.

Odd thing about all of this, is that when I shot artilleries, I could not keep the teeth in the system, just bad luck on my part I guess; so did not worry a lot about adjusting much.
