Since the seller has thoughtfully kept the bidders ID secret, there may not actually be any bidders. He may just be waiting for one victim to put in a bid. It's a jungle out there. Got to be careful.

Don,

Two of the most obvious things are the vertical belt loops, and the lifting strap being stitched separately from the bottom of the left belt loop.

And unless Jerry, AKA Edmundo, corrects me. I believe that it should have a center line of stitching across the back just below the belt loops.

Other than that. It's just "too pretty to be real"...

Ron, I have had many beautiful Women say the same thing about me....Actually Ron is correct. There are literally a half dozen reasons that stand out without thinking much about it. Wish I had as much time on my hands as Ron to explain them all. Take one of your original holsters and compare it. Not too hard to tell....Jerry JTPTBR Burney

Hi Charlie,

You might be right about the inside. Possibly some old shellac to help keep it a bit more water-proof ?

I have a very nice 1918 holster that looks like it has a patent-leather finish on the exterior but "raw" leather along the inside surfaces.

BTW...this holster went for over $ 525 and was picked up by one of the LF members.

I saw the bidders.

Considering the belt loops which seem to indicate use, perhaps the outside, the tool pouch, etc. received some old shellac.

I would have bid on it except for that. I know that there is a difference of opinion as to polishing a holster and some people are of a differing opinion from mine.

Boys and girls, You are dreaming. This holster is as fine an example as you are likely to see in the decades to come. The interior is right as rain in the Springtime. This is the finish the German Saddlers were able to achieve on high quality leather at the turn of the century. You will observe it on some holsters if you are able to look at enough of them. Many, most do not have it of course. Take a close look at the interior stitching holding on the closure strap. Dry as a bone. No covering of "shellac".
In reality, this holster should have brought a little more in my opinion. At any rate it will certainly be a grand investment. In the years to come holsters of this quality will appear less and less....
As for "polishing "a holster, it is sometimes necessary for many reasons. Depends on the materials and expertise used to do so. Completely ignoring preserving a vintage piece of leather is foolhardy in the extreme. It is a multifacited endeavor and one should not jump into it without due diligence. Jerry Burney

John, Thanks for the compliment! I'm actually Scotch Irish and Choctaw or Cherokee..some sort of mongrel. Not German!
