Leaving collecting...

Hi Folks,

FYI - Iâ??m going to be selling off most of my collection of firearms. Why? Well, itâ??s like thisâ?¦

A few weeks ago it suddenly occurred to me that it had been over two years since Iâ??d last gone shooting. Worse yet, it occurred to me I hadnâ??t actually seen most of the firearms in my collection in several years - and didnâ??t even know which firearms were in which safe!

This is a circumstance that needs to be corrected. Rather than have half a ton or so of Old Iron sitting in various safes and costing me a more than a little in insurance every blasted day, Iâ??m going to sell them off so they are in hands that will appreciate them as I once did.

Iâ??ve been a collector for over forty years, and much of that time held a class 01 and/or class 07 FFL. So there are lots of interesting firearms to sell - including some real rarities. I plan on offering them first on the forums I moderate (or frequent, for some specific firearms - like Lugers), and then selling at auction any that arenâ??t snapped up quickly.

Iâ??m going to start with the Lugers, so stay tunedâ?¦

I'm with Wes. You have some handguns that would make any collector drool, and folks here on the Lugerforum (contrary to what the name may imply) are interested in many types of early handguns. Really sorry to see you departing from the collecting scene (bet you hang on to a few!) but thank you for affording the fraternity an opportunity to acquire some really nice pieces.

Please do list a complete inventory of your holdings for sale, and post them here on the Lugerforum...

Knowing your background in firearms, may I recommend that you save some favorite pieces and GET OUT AND SHOOT THEM!

I like you, realized much the same thing about the time that had passed since I actually shot anything, and took my oldest granson Andrew (11 years old) out over the weekend and introduced him to shooting... I had not busted a cap for almost 10 years... now I am rejuvenated and will start shooting again on a regular basis... maybe we can arrange to do this together sometime.

I do hope that your extensive knowledge of firearms will not get mothballed just because your collection will get dispersed to others...

Like countless others, I cannot thank you enough for your generosity in sharing years of acquired knowledge. In my case, you helped me with a German Army Contract C96 and a Walther Postwar Export ("E" series) P38. Let me take this opportunity to publicly thank you for everything you have done for me. I'm sure that it is your generous nature that has led you to this decision.

P.P.S. I do remember that the "E" doesn't necessarily stand for "Export".

Steve, interesting note there on the Astra's, when I was 16 in Houston I bought an Astra 600 9mm WWII marked gun "all totally and completely in pieces" in a cigar box at a surplus store for like $15, I threw a paper route for spending money back then...

It was my first 9mm, and wow, what a tough recoil spring with that blowback design, I've toyed with collecting Astra's now that I've gotten the 9mm German pistol bug again...

Back on topic, though I've been a lurker for years, I've learned from Kyrie for years, "thank you sir", and here's to whatever makes you smile crossing paths with your future.

Entirely FWIWâ?¦

While Iâ??ve given up collecting, I wonâ??t be giving up firearms entirely - or shooting them. Iâ??ll be keeping those pieces of sentimental value to me (like the Persian Luger, which was a gift from a dear friend), a few â??shooter gradeâ?? pieces to use to introduce new shooters to the sport (like a 1916 Erfurt and the .22 conversion kit), and a few odds and sods things that may still prove useful (such as a pump 12 gauge or two - and a couple of side-by-side 16 gauges). So when the urge to shoot hits me, though it has done so with decreasing frequency in the last decade or so, Iâ??ll have the wherewithal to satisfy the urge.

But for the most part the collection will be sold - and Iâ??ll very happily list the pieces here so the folks here have an early crack at them. It will help me knowing they are all going to good homes :-)

Hey! Don't be crazy. I'm pleading with you not to stop collecting firearms. Sell some if you must. I got married and lived the first seven years of my married life in absolute poverty. I sold of many guns, most actually(a nice U.S martial handguns collection, and others) with but few regrets for I love my family and needed the money. If you don't need to get rid of anything, DON'T. Fix up old muscle cars, start metal detecting, get involved in politics, veer off on a tangent and see if the interest in old things won't renew. I'm sorry to preach, as I am not a preacher, but a fine hobby/passion is very near a neccesity of life in modern times.
