For this structure, you may open the windows on the 2nd floor, and push the snow off the porch from the windows. That's much safer than climbing the ladder.

We borrowed a roof rake, and removed tons (literally, tons!) of snow from the lower roof last weekend. But nothing can be done on the high roof.

It would be, if i could get the windows open. Notice the icicles? they dripped down into the window frame before freezing. Some of the ice is inside the window.

Ace didn't have any snow rakes. But I needed something I could slide to the sides anyway, not pull toward me. I saw that TV piece about the guy who was buried in snow for four hours when he was clearing his roof.

We faced the same problem -- ice inside window. We used a hair-dryer to blow the window in the afternoon (relatively warmer time), and finally opened all frozen windows. From 2nd floor windows, I even knocked off a few big roof ice pillars using a steel hammer

I don't have enough hair to warrant a hair drier.

I used to have a pair of [steel] baseball cleats - If I still had them, I could walk on porch roof. But they got donated to GoodWill. Some homeless person now makes a lot of noise walking around...

House/apartment building up the road from me burned last night...I spent an hour this morning shoveling a path to the fire hydrant across the street from my house.

I moved my cricket bat to the bedroom. The back window opens onto the roof/awning I shoveled off. The six foot pile of snow is right below it - I can smash the window, push the dog out & drop her on the snowpile, and then jump out myself.

I'm not planning on it...But I'm ready for it...
