Edmond and others,

Thanks for the info. I am curious about the topic, but too cheap to spend many $$ to find the answer. I guess if the situation arises, I'll try the 6 shot bumpstick instead of debating underwater monsters.

I suspect the range would be very limited because firing into water (from out of the water) doesn't give much penetration. Also, the shock wave might even be a help as it would affect the monster as well as the shooter.

Edmond, the Glock and 1911 info. gives me hope. I would guess that a revolver wouldn't have the same firing pin problem that a Glock might have underwater. Maybe I'll try the Ruger with a primed case only when I'm ready for a major cleaning job.

Maybe you guy's remember the Three Stooges episode where they were kicking the Kaiser around, anyhow the Stooges pissed off their sargent. He made them stick their heads in a water trough, stuck his revolver in the other end and fired. Fixed the Stooges right up. I recall a army ranger frend telling me a .45 was good for 18ft underwater, sounds dangerous! I thought the Stooge thing was funny. Stevie

Stevie,

I am still interested in this topic, but even 18 feet sounds like long range to me (underwater) based on the lousy penetration you get when you shoot into water (from above the water).

Anybody have some real data? Any test volunteers?

AGE,

Since Thor survived his experiment with the Luger cannon, he's probaly ready to tackle more interesting projects. Although finding enough water where he lives might be an obsticle. <img src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" border="0" alt="[hiha]" />

I do not claim to be an expert on shooting underwater, but as a youngster, we would sometimes immerse the barrel of our 22 rifles and shoot suckers (carp) that ran the river in the spring. I think the only effects would be the rapid absaorption of velocity by the water. We would then sell the carp to the fellow who owned the chinese restaurant in town. Those were the days!! Maybe higher caliber guns would have adverse effects espescially if you and the gun were underwater due to the concussion waves in the water? Supposedly dynamite will kill a fish. Who gave me this idea anyways????

I remember reading several years ago in Soldier Of Fortune magazine (forgive me my past reading habits) that several 1911 diehards at a convention wanted to test the theory. The tale went something like - jump in pool, make sure to shake all bubbles out of your Colt, 1911's will fire and cycle everytime, spent bullets can be recovered in near perfect condition. One man's fun is another man's foolishness.

Hey, BASE, what's to forgive? SOF is one of the few magazines that I subscribe to!

Base,

Maybe that's the same group of guys mentioned in the Handgunner article (I never had my hands on a SOF magazine). I'm still waiting for some underwater shooting data.

I wouldn't be surprised if a high velocity rifle fired with water in the barrel (or fired underwater) would be damaged. A rifle barrel holds a lot of water and adding this weight to the bullet weight without reducing powder charge would probably give reeeaaal high pressures.

On the other hand, a pistol barrel doesn't hold a lot of water and, if fired with a moderate load might be OK (except perhaps for the effect of the concussion on the shooter).

I think it works like a car being sumergedyou cannot open the doors till you break a window to equalise the pressure. Now--where did I put my dinamite?
