J.R.114.5.

Hello Gentlemen,

I know almost nothing about unit markings, and I need help..

On the attached photo the Luger pistole (1915 dated) has the stamp: Ã¢?? R.114.5. 12Ã¢?Â, which means that this pistol has been issued to the Infanterie Regiment 114, Kompanie 5, # 12. ok. (sorry for my bad photo).

I got the attached original photo showing a group of german soldiers from the Ã¢?? Ers. Batl. J.R. 114. 5. Komp. KorpÃ¢?Â, that I translate in Infanterie Regiment 114, Kompanie 5. Am I correct please ?

My question is:
is the Ã¢??R.114.5Ã¢?Â of the pistol the same Unit as the Ã¢?? Ers. Batl. J.R. 114. 5.Ã¢?Â of the original photo ?

Do you think that the photo looks better when color corrected to black and white, or in the aged brown 'sepia' tones ??

I know it's only a matter of personal preference; however, I do prefer the appearance of the black and white version.

From my understanding of the German army and the regimental marking system, I think the marking Ã¢??Ers. Batl. J.R. 114. 5. KompÃ¢?Â equates to the Replacement Battalion of the 114th Jager (Infantry) Regiment 5th Company.

This is not the same as the marking Ã¢??R.114.5. 12Ã¢?Â which equates to the 5th Company of the 114th Infantry Regiment.

The Replacement Battalion (as the name implies) existed to process replacements for the main regiment.

So the markings on the P 08 belong to the same regiment but not the same company.

The full name of the regiment -

6. Badisches Infanterie-Regiment Kaiser Friedrich III Nr.114 which was based in Konstanz in Baden in Southern Germany

Many thanks for these precious informations ! You confirm what George Anderson said on the Yan Still Forum about my question. I presume that this 114th Regiment was not the most prestigious of the Imperial Army..Also, looking at the poor guys on the photo, I think the Ersatz Battalion was probably a school ! Thanks again Richie !

I know I should look more often but work tends to get in the way !

The soldiers do look very young but I suspect that by 1918 the Germans were getting desparate for man power so they would use anybody they could.

The 114th Regiment was considered the best Regiment in the 199th Division.

It is interesting how many of them have their right thumb hooked into or resting on their belt. This was probably a natural responce to most armies prohibition of ever having your hands in your pockets.
Hitler continued this afectation, which likely dated from his WW1 service. He was often photographed with his thumb in this way while giving the nazi salute.
