Default Phony SA markings

In late 1984, K. Crane of San Carlos,CA, posted this drawing in AUTOMAG with a story that a local guy had brought this rare gun home from WW-2 and now wants to sell it.

The next edition of AUTOMAG had several reports [Buxton and others] of people who had seen/recorded the gun in 1983 on the table of a dealer from San Mateo, CA BEFORE it was SA marked!!

Reportedly, this dealer had also sold an SA marked P08 [1938-S/42] Luger which was Brandenburg/Berlin marked!

The P38 disappeared off the market

Remember, guys and gals, it is a JUNGLE out there!

Default Luger ID Database On The Forum...?

After reading a few weeks of Forum postings regarding alleged "fakery" and "upgraded" lugers and then seeing the ID sketch that the Shadow just posted, I had a thought :

1. Could each owner of a luger post a similar luger ID drawing on the Forum, somewhere ?

2. The ID sketch would record all relevant markings, stamps, wear patterns, scratches, dents etc. The ID sktech would be "dated" when posted and also reference the Owner's Forum user-name. In essence, this would document in time the condition of a unique luger. Maybe jpeg photo files could be added.

3. Then as this luger changes ownership through sale, trade, barter; there would be a record in time of that gun's condition.

4. The ID sketch would need to be "searchable" by serial number, and other parameters so others in the future could find the ID sketch...this would allow a prospective buyer of a luger to check the Forum to see if the gun was previously "documented" at some point in time in the past. Maybe the searcher would have to pay a small search fee each time a request is made, to cover the web-site costs...similar web services are available for used-cars in CA-state.

5. Yes, this could be seen by some as gun registration; but by using your Forum "name"; no one would really need to know the owner's true identity if you choose to remain anonymous...

John D. and DOK; is this something do-able on the Forum ? Or would this entail a new web-site to do such a recording of lugers ?

Just thought such a system would help keep all honest and bring a higher level of confidence in a luger purchase for the buyer...
