Default 1940 Mauser Banner E/L

I am looking at a 1940 date Mauser Banner E/L with a Simson contract barrel. The Simson barrel proof looks for the world like SU10, and in Costanzo's book he has several Banners in the same serial number range with Simson barrels, but they are SU40. On page 130 there is a SU40, but the 4 is shown as an open top 4, and even if the 10 is a broken die 40, the top of the 1 on this pistol would be a closed top 4. The top of the 1 has the long slash that is common to the German figure 1.

Has anyone else seen this proof?

Hi Johnny,

I have a very similar pistol. It is a 1940 E/L in the low 4000x serial range. It has a brown 1940 police holster numbered to the gun, matching E/L tool, and the number 3 H.S. magazine. Interesting part of this gun is it is hard to see the "S" in the SU, but you can tell the U10 very clearly. The barrel is E/N marked on the front sight block, but get this, is has a sharpe barrel band and not a rounded one.

Bill,

This pistol has the E/L (upside down) on the front sight block, and also has the sharp barrel band. Additionally the S in SU is not visible, but the 10 is deeply struck. This one has the matching number 1 magazine, but nothing else. There is a very visible difference in the finish of the barrel and the frame/receiver.
