byf Operational problem

Just had my luger out to the range for the first time. The gun is accurate but the trigger pull is brutal. I have also experienced several failures to fire, I have pulled the trigger all the way to the back of the trigger guard but the gun would not fire. Any suggestions?

Hi John,

Is the Luger an all matching pistol, or was it put together from parts?

The fit of the trigger plate, trigger lever, trigger and sear is a precision job for an experienced Luger gunsmith. This is why they were numbered parts...

First thing I'd check is the amount of pressure needed to release the sear, and how far in the sear bar has to be pressed to do this. Check for any play at the fulcrum of the sear bar. Forward/back, in and out, side to side...

Second, I'd ensure that the little plunger at the front of the sear bar is working properly. Check it to see if it's sticking in any way.

Third, I'd take a close look at the trigger plate, trigger lever and trigger itself to see it's condition and verify that it's tight and flat to the parts it mates with.

Pictures of the parts may help if you can post them...

Does your luger have a correct firing pin spring? Have you broken the luger down for a complete cleaning and lube? Is the firing pin spring retainer in good shape....how about the firing pin tip?

As you can see, there are a number of things that could be causing you a problem.

I would check the sear bar/ trigger bar for cracks. Just from my own experience I had one crack. When the trigger was pulled the bar would flex the gun would fire sometimes. Felt like it took every thing I had just to fire the gun. The bar finally broke in two. Replaced the trigger bar pistol is a dream now. Just a thought.

All parts are stamped with the last two digits of the serial number so it is not a parts gun. I have cleaned and lubed it prior to firing. I have ordered a new trigger lever ( it appears to have been worked on ) hope for better results when it arrives.

M, Where did you find your trigger lever? These are getting difficult to find. Just remember that these are not interchangable and may require some fitting, but don't try to bend one without first heating it red hot, as cold they will break before they will bend. TH
