Default Odd WWII 4inch Barrel question

Can someone tell me why the area just above the threads on this WWII 4inch barrel was made this way, was it at the end of the war and they were cutting corners on finishing them? There is no large rim on it just small collar of metal.

I picked it up the other day and was curious if it was rare to find one made like this. Thanks

Someone just slick machined the shoulder off the barrel. Maybe someone had cut the shoulder to make it easier to pull, and then machined it back smooth.

Hi Johnny...

Actually - it looks like it wasn't chucked in the lathe correctly (on center)- as the shoulders are off center equally (given the run-out of the top-left to the bottom right)??? If you notice the out of round conditions - it is off on both the right and the left..

And - if the factory did that - it shouldn't have been serialized to a Luger, as it would have been a reject..??

If it was done after the factory - then how was the metal added to the bbl so it could have been turned down (albeit "off center")..??

Thoughts anyone???

There would have been no reason for the factory to make a mess like the one shown. The lathe cut was taken through the original blue, so some budding gunsmith must have been practicing on the barrel.

I think that this is the work of a amature gunsmith.

Instead of obtaining the proper tool to remove the barrel,

this person simply chucked the barrel assembly over the chamber and removed the pressure by cutting off the shoulder to where the barrel could be removed by hand.

No reason to accuratly center it as it was to be junked.

There in no explanation for acts of ignorance !!!

They just happens !!!

Maybe the guy was a cam grinder in a past life and this accounts for the eccentric cut.

Viggo are rigth abouth why it was turned down.

That is actually a very common method when removing a barrel.

Mostly gunsmiths don't ever think there will be any use of a takeoff barrel.

This method is as common on riflebarrels as on pistolbarrels.
