Best way to sell a cartridge counter??

Hi all.

This site and all the information here have been so helpful to me and my father here as of late, however I would like some members' opinions on this particular matter!

My father (who is 69) was recently diagnosed with stomach cancer and is currently undergoing chemotherapy. He has decided to sell off some of his firearms collection beginning with his 1902 Cartridge Counter - SN#22417 IIRC (it's been a while since I looked at it!)

I would like your opinions as to what the best way to sell it would be!

It doesn't have the grips or magazine, so it certainly doesn't have the value of the complete units, but I can't even hazard a guess as to what it's worth

My thought was that an auction would be the way to get as much out of it as possible, but no-one in my family has EVER sold a gun, so I don't even know how or where to start looking!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

That is exciting news! I maintain a list of surviving Cartridge Counter Lugers. The number 22417 was reported to me years ago by a third party so I never knew who owned it or the condition.

I know that complete CC Lugers have sold for $30,000 plus, but I have no idea how to value your father's gun. I am sure to an advanced collector it would bring at least half that much depending on the overall conditon of the gun. The grips and magazine can be reproduced but that is an expensive undertaking and needs a collector with deep pockets to consider it.

The suggestion to send it to a big dealer is a good one, but it requires the necessary FFL transactions to send it and there will be a fee or commission charged by the dealer to sell it. Auctions also have a "seller's fee" that can be pretty stiff. If you do go the auction route make sure you put a high enough reserve on it so that it doesn't sell for a song.!

To verify the gun I have on my list is the same one, could you please check the serial number?

If you can determine a price that you are satisfied with, you could post it on this forum in the for sale section. No fees involved! Include the price and a couple of good photos. Good luck

What features besides the grips and magazine characterize a cartridge counter Luger?

It is of the 1902 "Fat Barrel" configuration in 9mm with the American Eagle chamber marking. It falls in a specific serial number range, 22401 to 22450. The inside of the frame is milled to accommodate the count indicator on the special magazine.

Number 22448 was purchased by that seller from FGS in March 2005.

I'll make a point to head over to my folks' place today, and I'll get some pictures of it for you to take a look at! My pop's been collecting Lugers for decades! I'm sure he's had this one for probably 40 years or so!

Any chance the grips and magazine are among your dad's things?

It seems that if precicely those parts are missing they may have been taken off to protect them.

Possible explanation for this CC missing the grips. When SA received these pistols from DWM, the grips on two CC were removed and the celluloid strip was added on two M1905 (?) Colt pistols according to information from Edward's book on the Colt pistols. So, actually, there were 48 CC Lugers remaining after their delivery to SA.

It is 22417, and dad's had it for around 45 years or so (he thinks)! It was one of the first in his collection! Unfortunately, it was missing the mags and grips when he bought it, so no luck on finding them in his stuff! Ever since I read about the 2 CC's having the grips and mags pirated for the Colt project, I liked to think that's the reason they're missing!

While I was rooting through his boxes of lugers to get a couple of pics of the CC, I came across a couple of other neat things and thought I'd share!
