Help on Appraisal/value for S42

I have a friend with a shop who called me in to look at an S42. He knows of my interest and wanted an idea of what he could fairly retail it for. He wants to give the seller a fair shake, as it was his fatherÃ¢??s from WWII. My collecting has been mostly in WWI and earlier and Swiss, so I have neglected the pricing (& actual selling prices) of the Nazi era.

No pics, but I can give a fair description as I am a long time owner/collector. It is a 1938 S42 rig with the capture paper from late 1945. It has one matching mag and one of the same type that is non-matching. The holster is brown, 1939 (sorry, forgot the maker) in good condition. It is a bit worn, but not abused or any loose stitching. There is a nametag taped on (looks like it could be removed), but no defacing.

The gun is all matching including the firing pin, hold open and rear toggle pin. The bore is very nice- shiny but a couple areas that arenÃ¢??t. You might say, Ã¢??Close to excellentÃ¢?Â. The finish is very nice with the visible wear being the rectangular high point of the side plate, a little muzzle wear and a couple high points on the frame. The front and back straps have no wear (a little on the high points of the stock lug) and maybe a just a little dull (hard to remember). There are no dings, scratches or signs of abuse. The grips have no dings and just a little bit of smoothness/wear at the bottom. Last, it has a WA655 marked tool in the pouch in the holster

I would rate the wear/appearance (gun only) very similar to this one:

Ã¢?Â¦However, I find SimpsonÃ¢??s condition specs often difficult to assess as some of their 93% -95% sort of look the same - (maybe itÃ¢??s the strap wear that makes the diff.). For example, this could be close, also:

So, IÃ¢??m thinking of getting this and am a bit confused about what to pay. I am willing to support my shop owner, as he is a fellow collector, enthusiast and a good guy. Regarding SimpsonÃ¢??s, I like them for their honesty, but often feel that their prices can be 10-20% above average selling prices. I have no problem with that Ã¢?? itÃ¢??s just what I feel is a statement of fact when using them as part of the information for an appraisal.

Hi Bob,

I sold a 1936 S/42 rig. Approximately as you discribe for $1400 + shipping. About a year ago. 1938s are a bit more plentifull.
