1914 Erfurt Question

I have a friend who picked this up a while back. I wondered what the heck is with the barrel piece. Any ideas about what it is or purpose?

I just looked without a light using my fingernail as a reflector, but couldn't see anything blatantly abnormal. He said he has shot it and it shot fine.

is it a repair from a bulged barrel?

I sure don't know. It seems to be flush. I couldn't tell if it was an added on piece or whet. The barrel sn matches the gun, so it isn't a replaced barrel. I wondered if anyone here has seen something like it. I sure can't figure it out.

It's a Bubba-fied Luger. Possibly an added-on sleeve to 'repair' a damaged artillery sight dovetail, but the braze is inexcusable.

Trashed about $350 worth of artillery sight plus whatever the barrel might be worth...Not much, by the looks of it...

I agree with Rich, bubba at work.
Looks like someone didn't like the artillery sight and turned down the front half of the base.
Then perhaps someone else decided to repair it; and we see the pitiful results.

Why? There is just no explaining "bubba's" ideas.

Probably worked for him. In the day these were cheap and plentiful. In 1962 I sold an all matching including mag. 41byf with holster for $40. And it was difficult to find a buyer. Bill

The 'repair' sleeve appears to be an unbroken 'O' shape (rather than a slip-over 'U') so my guess would be that the front sight has been altered in some way as well. Maybe cut off to fit the sleeve and brazed on afterward.

Eugene makes his Luger carbine rear sight [barrel] bases in the 'U' shape and then silver-solders them in place. My WAG - Much easier and less work than the 'O' bases.

But I'd be interested in more pics. There is always a nugget of information in any alteration, even if it is a negative one...

my guess is it was turned for some type of scope ring, and repaired at a later date on the workbench in the garage........

"Hacked" is too polite a term... in this instance the only word I can use to describe the work done to this Luger is "butchered"... What a shame.

Bill,

One ounce of Gold was worth $35 in 1962, so $40 for a used German Luger was quite a bit back then.

I had the guy with the gun send me a couple of pictures of the barrel and front sight. I hope they come out on here ok as they are from a phone picture. Also, he said the length of the barrel is 7 3/4.I can't see that the front sight has been removed as was earlier suggested.

Dave, These LPO8s with barrels of less than 8"s (around 7&1/2") are normally a result of the original fine tune front sight being frozen up and the post WW1 repair consisted of cutting off the barrel at the rear of the front sight base. The front of barrel was then turn down to accept a standard non-adjustable front sight and base. TH
