Rust Blue Question

This question is directed towards anyone willing to help. On average how many coats of the rust blue are applied to the pistol, or does it vary depending on how well the metal has been preped and the brand of rust blue being used? Is the rust blue process "forgiving" as to how clean your metal is (i.e. oils, dirt,etc.). An experienced opinion would be greatly appriciated!
