Arrow New Magazine tool fixture... progress report!

Hello to all! Stopped by my machinests shop yesterday, to see how we are doing on our newly designed fixture for some serious P.08 magazine repair.... I was quite pleased with what I observed! Here is a brief description of what is to be... The tool dimensions are: 5/8's of an inch thick, by 3" wide by 8" long... there is a relief slot cut down the center to locate the mag. shell, with equally (removable) spaced 1/4" dowel pins, to aid in keeping the mag. shell in the slot, and on the fixture when you really get serious about tapping on the shell! There are two provisions, or recesses adjacent to the slot that are used for removing or reinstalling the follower button, depending on which end of the fixture you use.. there are radius reliefs off each end to aid in locating the mag. shell and bottom for removal of the retaining pin on the standard sheetmetal type mag.... on the flip side... the plan is to cut the center slot(s) for work on extruded fxo type mag. shells... mostly for driving out the center retaining rivit.. and tapping out dents. After we are thru machining and grinding, we are going to have them case hardened to .003" or .004" to make them more resistant to denting from errent hammer blows! If you already have the mandrel, this will make a great complimentary tool for total mag. repair flexibility! Of course, I told my machineist that we could open up the tolerances a bit to get them done quicker, and again, he told me this is not possible! He only does things one way, perfect! These are neat... probably one or two more weeks, maybe sooner! I still have to wring out the prototype and make any necessary changes..( my drawings arn't always as good as his machining!!) Sometimes because of me, I get a perfectly machined mistake... boy does that make him angry! Best to all! till...later....GT

Hi To all! FINIALLY received the test block from my machinest to wring out in the testing stage.... the block dimensions are great and I was able to accomplish all the functions that were designed into the fixture... the tool works wonderfully in conjunction with the mandrel that I offered previously, as it give one some purchase when tapping out dents and moving metal... it happens with very little effort using a smooth face hammer and a brass or copper drift... There was one major process modification that was necessary for the original primary function of the tool, and that is the necessary addition of spring steel strips that MUST be used as protective shims/spacers when driving out the mag. follower button... this operation is most tricky. Even under the best conditions, it has a little more monkey motion involved, but when done correctly, even the most stubborn button can be removed without marking the shell! With the addition of the steel strips, (I'm planning on six strips per tool, 2 X .010, 2 X .020, 2 X .025 or .030,) we will probably skip the heat treat, but we'll see? It is impossible with out them! I will have more info soon as my machinist has left Sunday open as the production window date.... Best to all, til....lat'r....GT

Hi to all! They're finished and on their way to the heat treat... testing has proved, that we can't get around putting some hardness on the surface... So, ... As soon as they are back they will be ready for delivery.... all forum members that have one on order, (or would still like to purchase one), drop me an email as I don't have all your email address's available, and I'll fill you in on the details! ... best to all! til...lat'r....GT
