Feeding Problems

Hi,

My Lugers started to have problems feeding rounds from a full magazine. The live round wedge itself vertically between the bolt and chamber, same as stove pipe. But I have better luck with a half-full mag. I'm assuming I just have a bad mag, but was curious if anything else could be causing this?

The first thing that I would do, after a good cleaning and lube, would be to :

(1) Try different brands of 115/124gr FMJ ammo(WWB, PMC, Federal)

(2) Purchase one, or more Mec-Gar Luger mags.

Many time a good mag will solve the problem that you are experiencing. Many, if not most, Lugers are ammo sensitive. Do NOT use +P, +P+, or Nato 9mm ammo.

Offhand it sounds like either the mag catch cutout on your magazine has elongated to the point where it is locking the mag in place slightly lower than it should or the same wear issue, but on the mag catch. Trying a different magazine would let you know which it is.

Everything above is correct:

It is sometimes a combination of several things, can be frustrating.

Some things I have seen:
1) Magazine latch that holds mag too low
2) Mag bent at top causing bullets to be slightly off proper angle
3) Too hot of ammunition, action slams back into position too fast
( use paper trick to test)
4) Weak mainspring ( test same as above with proper ammunition)
5) Wrong type/ grain of ammunition
6) mag spring too weak

This is why they always say start with a new mag and go from there

Had this instance worked well in the past (while in your collection, of course) , and started having this issue recently?
