Post 7.65mm to 9mm conversion

Hi guys, just picked up a really nice mauser 7.65mm luger today. its in excellent condition. must be a fairly new model. its definitely a post wwii model. no pics uploaded yet. should have them tonight. looks to be about 95% new

anyway i was wondering(since this 7.65 ammo is EXPENSIVE) is it possible to convert over to a 9mm and if so what all is involved.

thanks
Justin

Conversion requires replacement or boring out of the barrel and replacement of the recoil spring. The front sight also will need replacing, but this in many cases will come with a replacement barrel. If you bore out the barrel and keep the original front sight the pistol will shoot a little bit high.

If you are talking about a Mauser re-intro, the barrel shank differs from pre-war Parabellums and is not interchangable.

You could probably work a horse trade for what it would cost to convert.

I might be among those you could work a horse trade with as I am among those crazy people who like the 7.65 mm.

Barrel replacement is far less expensive than reboring to a larger caliber... but does require special tools that the average gunsmith would not have... if you decide to change calibers, get someone who knows how and has the right tools.

Tom Heller (Lugerdoc) and Hugh Clark are two forum members that have a good reputation for barrel work.

Of course, if the guns you guys are talking about are mixed parts and not collectables... then you could just swap the whole upper assembly and both of you would be happy...

Good Luck, whatever you decide.

thanks for the replies. anyone know off the top of their head what the costs would be like for the barrel and recoil spring?

i take it, its a little more complex than just say changing the barrel on say my 1911 kimber then

Yes, it isn't something I would try right now and I built a 1911A1 clone from GI parts and also a M1 Carbine from parts years ago.

Yes, magazines are interchangeable... the best commercial ones are Mec-gar and triple-K

The best original magazines are the extruded FXO type or the East German equivilant... or the Extruded police magazines by Haenel Schmeisser, but these are expensive. the commercial mags are best for shooting because you don't have to worry about damaging them by dropping.

Prices for a new barrel installed? Probably about $100.00 or a little more, plus shipping of course, but get an exact quote from the two guys I mentioned earlier. You wouldn't have to send the whole gun, just the upper half...

right on. thanks man. i was told of a gunsmith around this area. i may seek him out. and see if he's had any luger experience. i like to keep things local, but if push comes to shove i'll get with the members you listed.

the 7.65 winchester ammo was like 30bucks a box here at the gun store but www.ammoman.com had the fiocci for 19bucks a box. i'm gonna do some more research. this is some expensive stuff.

Just exactly what sort of Mauser are we discussing here? Is it a Mauser re-intro from the 70's? How long a barrel and how thick? Swiss or German style frame?

Or ias it a vintage Mauser, in which case the production line shut down in June of 1942 with a few assembled from parts after that.

Or is it a mismatch?

Check your private messages icon, I reload and live about 20 minutes south of Huntsville. You get a set of dies and some brass and I can take care of the .30 problem. Also have some great places to shoot real close.

ok everyone here's two pics. i field stripped it, as far as i felt comfortable as shown in the pics. wasn't that bad really. no real signs of rust or even much wear. judging by the wear patterns and from what my kimber has worn i'd say no more than 200 rounds have passed through the gun if that. after each firing i'll try and strip it a tad more. i figure baby steps would be the prudent approach instead of ripping everything apart on this thing. only reason i want to take it apart more is to personally clean all the nooks and crannies, make sure everythings properly oiled and just for and giggles. hope you guys enjoy!

I don't mind seeing what it looks like apart, but really for almost all my guns, I never strip them all the way down, just down to unit level maintenance,

Ed

I adjust your pictures, left the link for larger ones, but us poor guys on dial up, a Megabyte takes a while to download.

Crown Vic 96, (I once owned a Crown Victoria '55) Your pictured luger is a 1970s era Swiss style Parabellum. Unfortunately, no one in this country is making the correct conversion barrels for these and standard PO8 barrels are 1/8" too short in the threaded area. I bought all of Interarms remaining parts for these when they folded, but am out of barrels. You could install a complete PO8 upper (Barrelled receiver) on your frame, and it would probably function OK, but the receiver in battery would be an 1/8" short of lining up with the front of the frame. I'm currently trying to get some long receiver 9mm barrels out of Europe, but there are both import & export restrictions. TH
