-42 BYF With Repro Holster For $ 100.00 ?
On Gunbroker site (auction item # 3055738), the follow is offered :
A -42 BYF with a repro holster for $ 100.00 ? Sounds way too good to be true... What's wrong with this photo ? Besides not too many bidders.. One photo shows a wide trigger guard. I thought all byf's had narrow trigger guards... What the heck is this gun ? http://www.gunbroker.com/auction/Vie...p?Item=3055738 |

Re: -42 BYF With Repro Holster For $ 100.00 ?
Pete, go back and look again, the high bid also says "Reserve not met" this means that the seller has set a minimum price, might be $800, before any of the bids will be accepted. This is a common practice on auctions such as ebay and others. Some of the sellers will put the item up at a low price then there will be a first bid of a greater sum, but if you look at the bidding history, no-one placed a bid. The seller wanted it look like someone is interested to get you to bid more.

Herb,
Thanks for setting me straight on the auction bidding process... Am I wrong about a wide trigger guard ? I did not think BYF's had such... |

Re: -42 BYF With Repro Holster For $ 100.00 ?
Don't really know. Harry Jones in his book, Luger Variations says it (wide trigger guard) is found on all 'old' style Lugers, by that I assume he means those manufactured up to 1906. Since this is a '42' model something is not right. BYF is a wartime code which should not appear on a pre-1906 model and if I recall 42 or S42 would be the correct code in use by Mauser(BYF) at that time, although Costanzo shows toggles with BYF in use from 1940-42 can't determine if that included all of 42 or just up to the beginning of that year. Perhaps Thor can shed additional light on this. In my opinion it is a parts gun and should not command a high price, keep an eye on it and see where the bidding goes.
