Default Grip Strap Markings

1st let me say thanks for allowing me to join the forum.

I recently purchased a 1921 DWM. The front grip strap is marked S.D. II R 244. my net research seems to indicate this was a police marking. The funny thing is these markings had been stamped through with what looks like a small chisel however they are still legible with a little study. The pistol does have the proper grips. The left grip notched for the magazine safety but the safety its self has been removed. The blue is about 85 percent. If some one could decipher the front strap markings for me I would greatly appreciate it

Welcome a board Retired Guy.
I have done a bit of research into Police markings in the past, as I own a police P08 myself.

There is a picture of a P08 grip markings in volume ii of the 'Borchardt and Luger automatic pistols', which reads S.D. II R 374, which tranlates into Schutzpolizei Dusseldorf, II kommando, Reviershaft, Waffe 374, (Municipal Police Dusseldorf, 2nd Precinct, Main force, Weapon 374).

Hope that helps

Richard

Chisel marks, mine also has them, Initally mine was marked S.L. Pol 3804, State police of Saxony, (Sächsische Landespolizei), formed just after WWI. This marking has been struck-out, chisel marks, in favour of one relating to the Leipzig Schutzpolizei. – (S.P.L.). The Landespolizei, (state police), were superseded by a national Ordnungspolizei in 1936, as part of a Nazi Party programme of centralization. The Schutzpolizei were the branch of the Ordnungspolizei responsible for policing large towns and cities.
