Default Schmeisser Magazine Followers

In my collection of Luger magazines, I have noticed at least four different variations in Schmeisser follower buttons. To see these variations, go to:

http://boards.rennlist.com/upload/LugerMag.JPG

#1. Large button fully checkered

#2. Large button, checkered with outside ring

#3. Same as #2, but slightly different checkering pattern

#4. Very small checkered button, very difficult to retract without a loading tool.

Any comments on these variations?

Default Great photo Aaron, how about a photo of the complete mags!

I only own one of these mags, but I wish I could afford a dozen... they are GREAT magazines and feed wonderfully.

My button is of the #2 variety.

I can only speculate that the differences were based on the preference of the individual gunsmith at the time of manufacture and the availability of checkering tools...

regards,

John Sabato

Aaron, I don't know if this helps or not, but for what it's worth, I have 5 Schmeisser mags, and they all appear to have the #2 or #3 follower button. However, I think that they're all later models because they have a square bottom are attached with only one pin in the center of the bottom. Only one has the Nazi eagle, the rest just have "2" and a serial no.

Little know fact: The Schmeisser mag follower are also eagle/37 marked on the left side. Your first issue Schmeisser mag (the one on left) has the correct fully checkered follower button, but I question the small button on the mag on the right; it looks like a poor replacement to me. I've never seen an original this small. There were also side marked Schmeissers that were blued, in addition to the nickel ones shown. Tom h.

Default Re: Speaking of Mags

I have a beautiful WWI mag, with new wood bottom by GT. Only problem is the follower button & pin have detached from the follower. I guess you remove bottom & spring and slide the follower down so that the hole in the follower aligns with the little round hole near the end of the mag. Here's where I need help: Apparently I need to strike the end of the pin and brad it to stay in place. Anybody able to tell me how to do this without tearing up beautiful mag? Thanks.

Hi Don! The best way,is to remove the pin, bottom, and spring, and then place the mag on a piece of aluminum with the follower button installed and the follower button side down. Then you line up the access hole, (now facing up) with the follower end you are trying to rivet. talk a pin punch, (a small radius on the end helps) and give the end a good tap with a small hammer, the aluminum will keep the checkered side from becoming deformed, yet allows enough support to make the end of the follower button upset and become tight in the follower! If you are uncomfortable with that send it to me and I'll give it a whack! till...later...G.T.

Your technique worked great! I didn't have a piece of aluminium, so I folded up so aluminum foil and put it on top of an anvil. Worked great! Thanks again.
