Talking 1900 Commercial

Dwight, I will always try to remember your data base when I run across one. I think what you are doing is very worthwhile

Cool 1900 Commercial

Dwight, the only early Luger book I have is Lugers at Random and I noticed this particular Luger has a longer checkered section on its safety Lever just like some of the early Swiss models in that book. Is this common to have the longer safety as well as the standard length one.

Thor,

What you describe is sometimes called the 'Type 1' thumb safety. It is relatively flat, checkered about half its length. 'Type 2' is rasied and checkered about 1/3 of its length, and 'Type 3' is the ridged thumb safety which we are all familiar with.

From my survey so far (and yes, I will publish interesting findings from it soon!), the Type 1 safety is found pretty consistently on the first thousand commercial serial# Lugers (both Commercial and Swiss Commercial).

Type 2 appears in the 2000 serial range (I have no samples in the 1000 range), then Type 1 reappears in parts of the 3000-4000 ranges--again, no differentiation made between Commercial and Swiss Commercial.

No American Eagle Luger in my survey has a Type 1 safety, but I would draw no firm conclusion based on the number of samples.

While we are on the subject of this gun, you will note that the takedown lever is numbered on the bottom. One of the interesting results of my survey is that this appears to be correct.
