Do I need matching #'s

I bought a nice shooter f/ Hugh.
(Import marks+someone took dremil to ser #)
Everything is marked 27; except sideplate(95).
Worth: $400-500?

I have come to the conclusion, that this is only/ever will be a shooter. Still a nice gun.

Do you think it w/ be worth to get matching # sideplate? Would it ever matter?

Some will say once a shooter, always a shooter (if you cant find the side plate that came with the gun) Others will say, do it! I say, it is up to you. If you do it and the gun later is sold and you are no longer around to tell the story, somebody will probably pay collector price rather than the shooter price you did. I say it is up to you! As far as editing posts, there is a little pencil icon above your post (after you have posted it) you click on that and it will let you edit the post. finding a replacement sideplate is harder said than done. and once you find one getting it to fit can be another problem. i''ve got an old reblued mismatched black widow with the same problem. someone etched out the numbers on the mismathced parts for some unknown reason and it really makes the parts look bad. i'd just like to find parts that look good, matching or not just to make it look nicer. but as long as you are up front with it i see no problem. matching #'s is one thing - all original and authentic is another. it's all in the wording(clinton's definition of what "is" is?) so just be careful.

This is a difficult subject due to passions and opinions. All I can relate to is me cause that's just the way I am and everyone else has their own feelings about it. I only want the shooter class because of my personal interests. I have no use for the collector level(aka droolers) because I want to shoot them, carry them, play with them, display them, and trade them. I also don't wish to pay what collectors cost. A shooter/non collectible Luger is still a Luger, with maybe as much as or more history than the other. But I highly respect the folks who collect. They put their money where their mouth is. Their knowledge is intimidating. I don't have that passion. And in the historical perspective, I'm sure that a soldier in the trenches at Verdun or on the Somme, at Stalingrad or jumping into Crete, or in the Ardennes in Dec 44 really never checked to see if the serial numbers and magazines matched on his P08 or anything else either. We are talking about monetary value in the differences.

Good call by both Thor and Roadkill on the matching numbers issue. Collectors have made this issue a real die on the hill concern and there is probably no other single issue about Lugers that can raise so much passion. It is all about intent (from the moment you buy a Luger to the time it leaves your possession..or you check out). It's a funny catch-22 situation because the people who despise the practice of 'matching-up' a Luger are the very ones who have made all matching Lugers so much more valuable. I personally want the Luger to have all matching numbers (and be original) so I am willing to pay extra for that feature. I also know that if I had a mismatched Luger but had the opportunity to put a matching sideplate on it I would not hesitate to do it. Understand, this would be for my own satisfaction. The problem comes along if it falls into someone else's possession. The true history of the gun is then lost, and if the match is good, the pistol then becomes something that it is not. I haven't had to deal with this problem on a personal level but have witnessed the fallout from it over the years. Thor is correct in the fact that it is your property and you have a right to do what makes you feel best. Roadkill is right about a German soldier probably never caring about the matching numbers that appeared all over his pistol. The unstated opinion is the collector who thinks he has an all original pistol then finds out that it is not original. I guess this is why so many of us can be skeptical and why there are two distinct categories of Luger pistols (shooters/collectors). I, myself, can't afford any more 'arsenal mismatches' in my Luger collection. [img]wink.gif[/img]

Don't even know the cost of a replacement side cover.

It doesn't effect shoot/value of this luger; but, something inside me wants me to "complete" this old lady. It's like I almost owe it to finish it(while it's in my safe).

Does this sound weird? Of all the guns I own, the luger has the most respect. It has lots of problems(big one is that import mark <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" /> ).
I usually "trick" my guns(scopes/bi-pods/lasers/etc.), but I have left the luger alone. One can't do much about adding assorys-but you can spend alot of $ on finish/condition.

It's about first love. Do I pour everything into this one, or do I start over w/ another?
It's strange to talk, like this, about a gun. But, it's a luger!

Start over with a collector grade Luger. Avoid trying to 'complete' an 'arsenal mismatch'. You will always know that it is not right.

It is common that there is much authentic history with the mismatched bring-back. Also, the soldier who brought it back would not ever replace any part of the pistol (for he would be replacing a part of his own soul).

Would a man search for an ugly woman to marry so that he can have plastic surgery performed on her face and accoutrements? Would she then be a beautiful woman? a fraud? or still the ugly woman to the man. And if the man parts with the enhanced woman, he will have hoisted a fraud upon the next man to take up with her.

You can send it to Thor for rebuild, will turn out to be a beautiful gun. Or use this one for a learner. I've got mine so that when I walk into the basement and look at it it jumps off the wall and disassembles itself. I can't leave it alone.I shoot it weekly and let my buddies shoot it too. I took it on a canoe/camping trip last week and coyote hunting last night. Can't do that with a collector grade. Use it to learn what to look for in a collector if that's where your interests are.
