Post Impossible to Understand...

...bidding on e-Bay even surprises me, sometimes :

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=2264955748

Over $ 800 for a collection of misc. small booklets and pamphlets by Robert Marvin...I have a couple of pieces that I picked up for $ 5.00 a piece and found the quality of the publications' printing was pretty poor...

Pete, I don't think there are any sleepers in that collection...

I don't know who the "winner" really is is, but the winner's ebay handle has been bidding only since August on Luger items... I just checked his history and back in August he paid $214 and change for a copy of Harry Jones "Luger Variations" that wasn't in very good condition... especially since the covers had separated from the pages... a book that usually sells for about $30.00

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=2264956366

I suspect he is a newbie with a new found interest in Lugers that doesn't know the real value of what he is bidding on... a Freshman at Luger University I would imagine...

I also know that Robert Marvin's widow has been slowly selling the books her husband authored on ebay over the last couple of years... I guess she finally decided to get rid of the whole lot of them and any other Luger related materials...This collection was sold by a third party...

Hi John S.,

I did send "subeshop" an email through e-Bay...inviting him to join the Luger Forum and to learn his lessons cheaper on our site... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

I think Mr. Subeshop just sells gun-related books through a speciality bookshop.

Some book dealers I see at Euro fairs tend to ask the most rediculous prices for publications.

For example I've seen Jan Still's books go for over 150EUR, attached to the story that 'they are no longer in print'. John Walter's 1977 Luger does 50 - 100 EUR, etc...

I think he will have no trouble reprinting and reselling the material he bought, making a reasonable profit on the side.

Here is a portion of the reply I received from the e-Bay buyer :

" I paid too much for the Variations book but that was offset by other good buys I have made. Which brings me to the Luger Journals. I was ASTOUNDED by the attention given to my purchase of this item. Let me say I have bought and sold a lot of antique paper (ie. books, magazines, catalogues, photos, comics, baseball cards.etc.) Anyone knows that a "complete" collection of anything is worth more than the sum of it's individual parts. I've seen individual luger journals cheap, but I bet the set was worth a lot more than the total of the individual issues. As it is , I have made arragements to sell my set to an advanced collector after making a few copies for myself. So there is a method to my maddness. I hope this explains the mystery of the Luger Journals, and I do hope that the one guy's wife does get him something nice for Christmas. "

Pete... <img border="0" alt="[typing]" title="" src="graemlins/yltype.gif" />

If its my wife I'd be amazed, she'll buy me stuff, but I don't think over $800 bucks worth of magazines!!

But, I do agree with Mr Subshop, that a complete collection is worth considerably more than a few magazines.
