Default Luger grips question

Still's "Third Reich Lugers" states grips were "usually" numbered to the gun. My code 42 1940 Luger does not have numbered grips but they are stamped with Waffenamts. The grips on my byf 42 have no markings but certainly look original. I assume some grips were unumbered/marked?

Yes, you are correct. A lot of grips were not numbered to the gun. Some have acceptance marks such as a Eagle 63, Eagle 655, or Eagle 135 on the inside, and other are completely blank. It is random, but is always nice to have the numbered ones.
