Luger Honeymoon!! How Long is it?

When I get in a new Luger I really clean it, look it over and occasionally shoot it. I carry it around the house, watch WWII movies with it in tow, put it up on the display board, then in about a week, I start dreaming of the next one! I bring all out for a through cleaning then maybe up on the board a day, then back into the crypt!!!! I always enjoy them, but not as much as at the unveiling when they arrive. How about you guys? Ted

;-)) I use to do it the same way ;-)) Waiting + searching for the next one is thrilling - and not as questionable as waiting for another... ;-) you know ! ;-))

Hi Ted,

Nice to hear others do "strange" things too! Every gun I aquire gets taken apart and cleaned, the day it comes home. After that it will sit by my TV chair so it can be "fondled" at will, until I have time to take it to the range. (There are no kids in our house!)

My wife thinks I'm nuts, but I tell her it has a purpose. By taking it apart I become familar with the internal workings and by fondleing I learn how to handle it. This way, when I take it to the range there are fewer surprises. Plus if there are problems I'm better able to determine their extent at the time.

Anyway - me too!!!

I do something similar, except I display it on my desk top (no kids in the house either)

Bob,

I thought I was the only strange one around, but it looks like other Luger guys do the same as I do. My wife thinks I am nuts for playing with it for 1-2 weeks and then it is off to the vault to look at only once a week or so. Glad to know I am normal!!!

Ted you really nailed it. I'm the same way with all my "toys", I even delay opening the box for awhile to really let the anticipation build, then pull the gun out a little at a time, agonizing over every little ding, or glorying in each positive detail. Takes longer with rifles. I then disassemble, clean, reassemble and search out a book. One of the longest weeks on my life was waiting for my Lugers, even driving 40 miles to pick them up at the FEDEX office when I missed their delivery. But I have shooters, and they don't gather dust, I shoot them most every week, jams and all, then I get to clean 'em.

Bob, yes I have a great appreciation for that get your fingers dirty approach. I try to shoot mine at least twice a month and really enjoy the cleaning and the getting ready for the next range run.

I have quite a few handguns, but there's nothing, in my opinion like shooting a Luger, the balance, feel, and "pointability" of it is like no other. But of course I don't have to point that out here.

Shooters will walk by and start a conversation, then ask How accurate are they. I usually offer a five round clip and after they finish, they turn around and say WOW!!! Do they still make these? How much are they? and, well you know the rest.

Every time I buy a gun, I think, "Well, this is going to have to satisfy me for awhile." That never happens because I always start thinking about what I want next. A true collector is never satisfied and always wants more. It is an addiction that there is no known cure for.

I agree Rick, it's a never-ending but fruitful hobby with far more highs than lows. It was the lack of perceived recoil that surprised me too when I first fired my Luger, that and the precision workmanship evident in it's manufacture.

I share some of those... I have been in love with the Luger for many years. I fall in love first with the design, the shape, then the mystique. I now own two of the three great loves, a Colt 1851 Army and the Luger... only one now remains... the Broom...

Hey Ted. My K date is sitting on the coffee table along with my svw 45 dual tone P38 in its Brown Pig Skin Holster.Since I am alone I play with them all the time.
