Post What Kind/Model of Lugers do You Like to Collect?

The Luger Forum has created a fantastic 'fraternity' where Luger collectors can come together to ask specific or general questions and discuss matters of keen interest. Some of us know each other personally, others by word of mouth and others are newcomers.

As a result of the broad production or different model Lugers and our selective tastes, would the many members of this forum like to share with others what types/models of Lugers and accessories they collect?

To start this thread, I am a collector of mainly early and rare production Lugers made between 1900-1910.

Thank you for sharing your Luger interests and desires.

Happy hunting,
Albert

I collect the kind that go "BANG' when the trigger is pulled. Tend to go with arsnel or professionally refinished models that I can play with without worring about breaking something. Have one original all matching DWM, less mag, but would sell it to get $$ for something more interesting. Also buy just about any kind of part I think I might need, even if I don't. I also have a large reference library that I use very frequently.

Hello Albert,

I am a 47 year old that just started with lugers 6 months ago.

I decided my acquisition plan would entail 2-3 lugers from each luger era (i.e. Imperial, Weimar, 3rd. Reich, and Post WWII...).

Sort of like a chinese restaurant menu,...one from each column !!! This forces me to read and learn all I can about all the eras.

I decided this would give me a nice "starter collection" and let me build up from there. Within this starter collection, I seem to like Swiss Bern models...having a 1924 Bern and a 1929 Bern.

I tend to like lugers with grip safeties and those lovely 4-3/4" bbls., but have a couple of P-08's as well.

I like the Imperial and early Weimar period Lugers with an emphasis on Erfurts. IMO, the 4 3/4 inch barrel 1906 models are the Veronica Lakes of the Luger world. Graceful, slender and, if any gun qualifies as such, it's just plain sexy! I also happen to like the 7.65mm cartridge so my "collection" is somewhat eclectic. My "shooter" is an E. German rework that's about to be joined by a six inch .30 caliber top.

Hi Albert,

I have WWII Mausers. The P.08 with 4-inch barrel just looks right to me. The guns have a genuine history that I deeply appreciate. And many US servicemen gave their lives and various body parts to insure that in the year 2002 Americans live ourselves are able to collect Nazi Lugers, and to insure it wasn't the Germans who could collect Garands and Colt 1911s!

Like Pete, I started actively collecting about six months ago. Conventional wisdom is, determine what it is you want to collect and then concentrate on that. I seem to be doing things the other way around, finding and buying Lugers which interest me and then finding out what it means.

It seems to me, that I am most interested in pre-WWII Lugers. I suppose I am looking for an over-all rerpresentitive sample of various major types.

Someone else posted, somewhere along the line, that they regarded DWM Lugers as authentic, and Mauser produced Lugers as reproductions. I feel some affinity for that point of view. Otoh, I suppose I am a bit schizophrenic about the whole thing, as I prefer to shoot 9mm WWII guns, and I have a hard time passing up any Luger at a decent price which seem...interesting.

Dwight, I can understand that.

I started with a Luger. Didn't know or care at the time what it really was, it was a artillery reblue and I have it still. Then bought a 1940 mismatch and now have an all original 1940 (not on purpose, just worked out that way). Another and still looking.

I would love to get some of the pre WW2 ones and I am leaning towards looking for a one, but like others, at the right price, a Luger is a Luger and I can always learn to love a odd one out.

Hi Albert:
I started on my second attempt with lugers in 1990. I have avoided the word collector and considered myself to be just an accumulator: but, I believe Wes better defined me, in a previous thread, with the word "hoarder". I like them (Lugers) all so my "HOARD" spans Borchardt 1896 to BYF 1942.

I have one Luger, a Mauser military! However I'm going to try to branch off into the Erfurts and Swiss models! I still love ALL Lugers though!

Hi Albert..!

Umm - I've got mostly grey hair nowadays - and to put things into perspective, I've been collecting long before I got my first grey hair The good news in that statement is - that I still have all my hair

Anyway - my collecting interests are mostly in the Krieghoff area - but I do own several other examples that seem to have somehow slipped into my collection.

Also - I was almost swayed recently by a person on this Forum to get into another era of Lugers (Oh my gosh - "diversify"???). While I won't mention his name specifically - I will issue this general warning: DO not hang around with Ron Wood when there are â??mintyâ? early-era Lugers for sale !!!

John I think RW could be a bad influence, but his six-pack case of Lugers was a bit daunting! I mean, that Swiss and that Swiss and that old sytle and the .45 Kraus and... heavens, I'm sweating, have to go sit down for a bit.

You Think? I KNOW!! Seriously - after seeing the pieces he brought - I wandered over and started looking at a Fat Barrel, a Swiss with a lanyard, and an American Eagle... Ron quickly sauntered over - and began to tell me how great these were, the manufacturing differences between the variations, how to spot grips that... Well - you get the idea....

Honestly - it wasn't until THOR held a 1944 HK matched RIG under my nose - did I regain my senses (Thanks Ted!!! )...

Never again, I say..!!!

That is good news John... not many folks our age can make that claim

I sure can't

BTW, you are falling behind in reading your email and private messages again...

Gray hairs run in my family too, we usually keep our hair, but I've had those pesky gray ones for years too.

I used to tell the barber to cut out the gray ones (kidding of course ) and now I don't dare say that!

Everyone has a role in life, even if it is only to serve as a bad influence!
I guess by now the cat is out of the bag about what I collect. There is something about a grip safety that rings my chimes. Anyway, remember my motto: "If it is made after 1918, it is a reproduction!"
Actually I only like Lugers that have a toggle action.
