Default Rust removal

I have a Landers Frary and Clark 1917 trench knife. Unfortunately there is a fair amount of surface rust on the hand guard.

Any suggestion on how to deal with this without affecting the original finish?

Thanks much

The search function on this site is your friend, and actually works pretty well compared to other forums...

This is the best method I have ever found for rust removal...
