BTW Bob, both Saab and Volvo had a program than many GI's took advantage of back in the 70's/80's. If an American GI bought either, they could get it delivered or....they would pay for your way to Sweden (train), all expenses paid for three days while there and drive it back to Germany. I never took advantage of the deal, I was a bit apprehensive of the Swedish ladies, for example, Brigitte Nielsen, so I stayed clear of trouble.

Saab called that program European Delivery. I was set up to go to Sweden and buy a new Saab Turbo in 1987 for my honeymoon. Month before wedding mom and my fiancé had a huge fight and we broke up. So I took my dad. I had the best trip of my life.Instead of going shopping,we went to gun and car museums. Drove for hours at 125 MPH on the Autobahn. We found the gals in Sweden and Germany, where VERY friendly. Good times!
All turned out well,have been married for 26 years now, to a great wife.

Honeymoons and Museums.............

One of mine was in Copenhagen and we too visited a military museum there and that was one helleva museum, it was located in an old cavalry barracks. Tivoli Gardens was nice too.

I liked the dutch girls.....the german girls were a bit too hairy for me.

We went to the Royal Danish Arsenal museum as well. Guns as far as the eye could see! It was nirvana!
I hear lately they have taken off display all guns that can use commercially available ammo.
So sad!

My first car was a '59 Chevy Bel Air almost identical to this one. Mine was a shade or so lighter (Coral) and had chrome rims with inside Baby Moons and Red-Line Tiger Paws.
Had a 283 ci punched out to 309 ci with an AFB. It sucked gas so fast you could watch the needle move.

Still got my last car... '01 Road King Classic..

Yes, a '59 Borgward Isabella. I bought it for a hundred bucks from the man who was to become my father-in-law for 10 years. They had owned a Goliath before that. Sold by the local Cadillac dealer. I could coax the 60 screamin' horses of the 1500cc motor to chirp the tires, going into second gear. The 4-speed tranny's shift lever was indeed mounted on the steering column (like the Benz's)--sort of in the middle between "Three on the tree" and "Four on the floor", and it didn't rhyme.

I had occasion to go to Phoenix a few years back, and on a side trip to Payson, I encountered a place called "All Bikes", a few acres within a chain link fence with rows and rows and rows of bicycles and motorcycles...stacks, even. Parked in front of one of the buildings, fairly permanently, a Borgward Isabella 2-seater coupe... Before I got yelled at by the owner for doing so, I opened the driver's door and took a sniff--nothing brings back memories like smell--and it was just like mine, to the nose! The proprietor, who came off to me as kind of a big jerk, claimed to have started out in California, working with George Barris, who designed and built the Dragula and the Musnter coach, in the 60's.

OK, you got me going now. After a '60 Mercedes 220SB that I traded the Borgward for, even up (My service station-owning friend said it was the only deal he knew of where BOTH parties got screwed!), a '62 Rambler 4-door (front seats reclined to create a double bed!), and a '65 T-bird 2-door hard top (a gas guzzling behemoth in this vintage) I bought the '64/5 Volvo P-1800. I generally loved them all, but this was my fave. Once again, a pic from the net, and I'd installed fog/driving lights, but trim and color same as mine.

My Niece had a completely restored '67 or '68 (?) Shelby GT 500 Mustang Fastback. She was visiting a friend, and developer was shoring up a road to his high end housing development on the hill across from her friend's house.

A huge boulder broke loose, rolled down the hill, across her friends front yard, and dead centered the right side of her Mustang, totalling it out. If her car hadn't been there the boulder would have gone directly through the living room where they were sitting.

Kind of one of those damned if you do, damned if you don't instances...
