1929 DWM Navy (large pic files)

Here are better pics and a description of the luger I had previously posted about. Feel free tp point out any inaccuracies:

Here a 1929 DWM Reichsmarine (Navy) Luger. In 1929, DWM was producing Lugers with undated chambers (these lugers are often referred to as Ã¢??DWM SNEAKSÃ¢?ÂÃ¢?Â¦ the Ã¢??sneakÃ¢?Â referring to the fact that the undated lugers were an attempt to deceive the allies about current luger production). These 1929 DWMÃ¢??s were serialized in the military pattern, but they were proofed commercially. The smaller parts (takedown lever/sideplate) numbers were placed in Ã¢??hiddenÃ¢?Â locations.

Most of the 1929 DWMÃ¢??s were sold commercially or supplied to the German police forces. A very small number (under 2,000) of these lugers were purchased by the Reichsmarine (the post WWI German Navy). The M/Anchor/N.280 markings on the rear gripstrap indicate that this example was issued to the North Sea Fleet, weapon number 280. Weimar Navy guns are rarely encountered, most being reworked Imperial era lugers. This luger is not a rework, it is a new production DWM that was delivered to the Weimar Navy. This luger would be the centerpiece of many Navy collections.

A very fine Luger and excellent presentation. My only comment on your writeup relates to your statement (and I admit it is a nit-pick):

DWM adopted the format of numbering in blocks of 9,999 with a letter suffix for their "commercial" production beginning in 1921 so there really wasn't a distinction between the military and commercial formats past this date. The numbering of small parts, as well as the proofing as you point out, for the Alphabet and 29 DWMs was, however, in the commercial style.

Nice rare Luger. I have never seen one for sale and wondered if I ever do what range of value would you place on these guns?

I have a 29 DWM Police that is numbered in both the commercial and military style. Gripstrap is not marked.

Please excuse this ignorant comment, but this piece looks like a 1920 9mm commercial luger with the Navy grip strap markings. Are there any other features of this pistol that I may be missing that makes it a Navy procurement piece? There have been previous postings on both Forums in the past as to how easy it is to fake this sort of rare Navy. How are the Navy markings made....pantographing, engraving, or stamping? What should one look for to make one think the stamping was original or not?

The serial number suffix is "s" which puts this pistol in the 29 DWM serial range. t and u suffixes are also 29 DWM's. I would assume that the Navy markings are pantographed but someone else more qualified than little 'ole
me needs to comment on this.
