Question Luger disassembly and repair question

Here's a simple one. I understand that the Luger is a bit complex when compared to certain other side arms. Can the Luger be readily dissambled, cleaned and reassembled buy the average shooter. And also, what sort of problems are the most common when shooting vintage Lugers and can these breaks/problems be readily repaired by the average shooter or must they be left to a pro? Again, pardon my ignorance, but this seems to be the best place to ask questions and learn.

Evening. Not only can a Luger be disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled by the average shooter, it can be disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled (and correctly) by the much less than average shooter cause I do it frequently. Problems usually depend on the condition of the gun cause unless you have a modern reproduction any original Luger will be at least 60 years old. Main problem with shooter guns usually involves magazine and/or mainspring. Add in a worn ejector and maybe weak ammo and they can be difficult to get going right. Trial and error and asking folks here what to do next will fix most of the problems. Any reasonably capable gun person can fix most of the problems. And you can always ask the pros here. They will assist.

Scott,

With a little practice the disassembly and reassembly can be done within 2-3 minutes in each direction.

The next challenge is to do both with ones eyes closed...

Thinking this "test" might be the contest we Luger Forum attendees should do at the next Reno gun show in April 2004. The party that cannot, pays for the steak dinners for all on Friday night. If all can do, the slowest person looses and pays...

Regards,

Pete... <img border="0" alt="[typing]" title="" src="graemlins/yltype.gif" />

One critical point on taking the left grip off is that the top rear corner is VERY easy to break. Unless necessary. leave the left grip on. If you want to take it off, remove the right side first. Then take the screw out of the left and push the gip out JUST enough to clear the metal parts and then slide it down. If you just pull the bottom out like on most guns, you will break the corner which is called the million dollar chip due to so many being broken. Other than that, it is a straight forward process.

There are several books that have photos on how to strip these guns and all the variations work the same. Also, look in the "Technical Information" section to the left. There is a gook tutorial on this.

Welcome to our happy little forum! We try to be helpfull and don't be insulted by the humor some members use. (never by me!)

Has anyone else noticed that we are only 111 members short of the 2,000 mark?

I've been practicing by doing it with one eye closed. Coming along pretty well; next week I'll use the other eye.
