Hello Doug,

Here is the magazine safety detail drawings I promised to upload for you.

Illustration is from Fred A. Datig's book, The Luger Pistol (1962 revised edition) on page 260.

Sorry I did not want to scan the device from my police luger. I just did not want to chance breaking it in the course of removal to take photos or scans...

(and tie this one with the Sear Safety comment on the Swiss board), what is the advantage to the magazine safety and what is the reason the police had them and not others?

Any indication that these were required across the board?
Weren't police units separate in the different states??

Hell RK,

I am no expert, but here goes :

With the magazine in the pistol, the magazine pushes the whole device more outward, to the left of the pistol side. This allows the tab behind the trigger in the trigger well to clear the back of the trigger so the trigger can be pulled.

When the magazine is removed, the "spring" nature of the device springs the device more into the side of the frame. This causes the tab behind the trigger to fall into place directly behind the trigger, thus preventing the trigger from being pulled back.

I will defer to our Forum police experts to answer those questions about who these were issued to and why.

If you switch to the Unit Markings section in the Forum, you will see my post and photos of my newly acquired police luger. Yes my gun has the safety intake, but was deactivate by having the tab behind the trigger filed down... <img src="graemlins/crying.gif" border="0" alt="[crying]" />

Here is an illustration of the mag safety from the excellent E-book on Luger mechanics by Gerard Henrotin... Hope this helps.

As to the whys? Evidently there was at least one and maybe more accidental discharges by inept and careless police at the time and these devices were designed and retro-fitted to police destined Lugers... to protect the police from themselves...

In practice, they were found to be a hinderance, and that is why most of them are found to be disabled or removed...

An old friend who was a deputy sheriff in WA-State once told me he liked a magazine safety on his semi-auto; in case you are struggling with a suspect and he tries to wreasle the gun out of your hand, you have a chance to hit the magazine release, hope if drops clear, and then if the gun is lost to the suspect, he can't easily shoot you with your own gun...

That is something to ponder Pete, but on the other hand, you also couldn't even defend yourself one shot at a time if you lost your magazine in the heat of a serious social event.
