Rguns luger report as promised

Hey guys so I picked up my Luger today. I know nothing about lugers but I will describe it best I can while trying to get pictures up. It is dated 1940 on the receiver and it has its original barrel with the witness marks lining up. Everything is matching except 3 marks on the pistol. The toggle h as a 42 and in 3 different places on top there is a 45 (behind the sites, on the extractor, and another mark on top) There seems to be a pretty good amount of pitting. I didnt know what to expect going into this and still have no idea what I have but Im pretty happy with it. I need to clean it up and figure out how to post pictures.

i still am having issues posting the pictures but i think the 42 means its a mauser right?

Correct on the 42 - it was the Mauser code in 1940. I hate to tell you that the toggle train is not original to the rest of the pistol. It came from another pistol whose serial number ended in 45.
Other than not very much finish, it looks healthy. If it shoots safely, and you are happy with the pistol and the price, no problems.

oh man now im kind of ticked off... since I requested matching handpicked. hmm Im debating right now if its worth the hassle of getting in changed. How difficult would it be to come by another toggle train that is marked 10?

I would send it back, personally. If this is "Hand Picked" then they must be scrapping the bottom of the barrel of what they brought in. Not only is it clearly mismatched, but it has a monster chip out of the grip at the safety.

I am surprised. Given this condition, Rguns is not cheap. Actually, it's very expensive.

Where did they import those guns.... Not from Russia??

That's not a Russian capture is it? I hesitated ordering from them thinking they would be.

As far as finish goes, there is none but there doesn't appear almost any rust either. Now if they had only gotten the matching numbers order right....

I am also intrigued to know where they found their lugers.

well you did not get matching and i doubt it was hand picked, i would at least try and get a refund for that part, RGUNS once more has failed to deliver. Like i have said before buy with extreme caution from them.

Yours is about the third instance I've heard of someone not getting what they paid for.

I gave them a call and he basically dismissed the pitting over the pistol and I can somewhat understand his point. He was saying that they are getting down to the last couple of Lugers. But your right it is clear mismatching. I am going to mail it back on Monday and try to find one to buy on here I guess.

I know a lot o f people focus on price and what they can afford to buy, andI fully understand that. But the one thing most of us collectors have learned over the years is that there is no substitute for QUALITY. You get what you pay for and a non-collectible firearm will always be a non- collectible firearm.

roger that. If R Guns has that few of lugers they should not be offering all matching or hand picked, it's that easy just say it in the ad's sold out and only no matching fair to poor available. They have been puling this for awhile, probalby hoping they will get by with it.

my .02 cents- when clapped out shooters start selling for almost the price of a brand new fn 5.7 pistol or a new saiga ak its kind of a no brainer that its no longer realistic to even own a plinker.

Judging by the state of this pistol, the bottoms of the Ukrainian luger barrels have been reached. Mismatched and almost no blue, with pitting thrown in as a bonus. That's bad even for Ukrainian standards.

Perhaps Thor can make something out of it? They usually are mechanically sound shooters.

Interesting that these examples didn't get the Russian dip process if they are from the Ukraine.

I am not that 'old' being 'only' 51, but since I have been in the hobby, I have ALWAYS heard:

1. How lugers are 'too' expensive, that I can't afford them
2. That younger collectors can't get into this hobby
3. That there are fewer younger collectors
4. That ALL the good guns have been bought
etc, etc



My personal 'feeling' is that;

1. Lugers have always been collectable (with the last 3 years have been an anomaly) / that lugers simply are like Winchester 1873's or Colt SSA - more expensive than other guns
2 & 3. Yes, I see many younger collectors on the boards and forum, the problem is that many times the younger collectors are not OUR relatives
4. Tons of good guns out there and if you look around and talk to the right folks, at any time, any day, I could buy 40-50 lugers or more / if I had the money to buy GOOD quality like Herman said

I am 50 myself, and have wanted a Luger for ages, but prices, availability and the steep learning curve kept me from taking the plunge, until now. I've been reading, lurking and trying to absorb all the Luger lore I can, and this has helped me to avoid the Rguns type situations. Quality will always cost more, and BE WORTH MORE LATER. I am grateful for this forum and others like it, for the opportunity to learn and possibly avoid making $$$ mistakes.

I have to say, as someone who bought an RGuns Luger and got what he wanted: when/if I feel I need a third Luger then I'll either rely on something local (though I've seen none in the Seattle area other than Stoeger .22s or the one Erma .22) or our WTS from my trusted fellow forum denizens.

I don't know if it's 'realistic' or not with regard to plinkers, but I'd rather save up and have a good Luger than some modern thingamajig without half the style, elegance, or grace. Especially since I've seen many deals I've seen here (from pawn shop stories or like the 'blingy' Luger that came through a few months ago), I still think there are deals if one has the patience and I was one of those young collectors Ed mentioned. I was 20 when I joined up and this was the place I showed off my first Luger when I bought it a few months later when I turned 21.
