New Camera Test...

...had to pick up a new digital camera so playing around with the new one to figure out settings and macro shots...

Figured I would share a few pics of my Swiss M1882 revolver...this was the type of revolver that was in use when the Luger was tested and hoped to replace...but both the Luger and updated models of this revolver (M1929) were used well into the 1940's...

This M1882 is a commercial series, did not see a lot of use and is still original. Luger Forum member, SwissDaggers, was kind enough to sell this one to me last year.

Hello Herb and Tom,

I was in a rush when I took these shots, as I was heading out for a road trip...I think I will get the macro-photography down better with more practice.

The new camera is an Olympus C-5000 Camedia, 5.0 MP, 10 optical zoom, 3x digital zoom (I think...). Got it with a 512 MB memory card, as well.

It is nearly 1/2 the size of my previous Casio camera, which was pretty small already...but it does have a tripod mount and a hot-shoe for external flash as well (which looks totally ridiculous...).

This one should be really easy to sneak into gun shows (my Doc friend taught me that... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> )

Pete, your new camera does take a nice picture and you'll find lots of use for it, I'm sure. Olympus makes a fine camera... I've owned an OM-1 since 1973. I wouldn't buy a digital camera without the hot-shoe as the on-camera flash lacks the output needed for distance.

A good photo-program will come in handy too. I use Corel Photo-Paint 8 but there are many other fine programs out there too.

Nice pics Pete. Just out of curiosity did you resize the photos or use the low resolution setting on the camera?

The camera has six (6) settings at :

* 2560 x 1920
* 2048 x 1536
* 1600 x 1200
* 1280 x 960
* 1024 x 768
* 640 x 480

I think I used the 2048 x 1536 and then resized to fit the LF file size limit.

Just for kicks, try it again at 640x480 to see what you get. I'd be interested in the seeing the difference.

I will do so, in about a week. Am on the road.

When I get home I will re-shoot this M1882 as you suggest. Will also have a couple of new gun toys to photograph as well. My Sauer 38H and my first P.38 (a Walther ac45...oops...rather an ac44...).

Pete, I also have an ac45 P38, numbers don't match but it is one shooting son-of-a gun. It is the semi-auto that I used to qualify when I took the test for my concealed carry permit here in Utah. Very accurate and usually trouble free. We went to the range in weather that was in the 20's, wind blowing about 20 and I had loaded the mags to 8 rounds. Nearly every one of them failed to feed. Reduced the loads to 6 rounds and had no problems after that. The strange thing is I have no problem in warm weather with 8 rounds in the mags. ??? Go figure.

Herb, It seems to me that 20 degrees really isn't that cold... BUT if the gun was close to that temperature AND there was LUBE inside the mag that really wasn't designed to function at that temperature it may have been congealed by the cold and allowed the follower to drag on it's way up causing the misfeeds. By the time that you reduced the loads to 6 rounds, the mag and gun may have been warmed by your hand and the lube was allowed to do it's job.

Try cleaning your P38 mags well and lubing lightly with breakfree and see if you have the same kind of problem at that temperature. If the weather is warming up to the point where you can't test at that temperature, take an ice chest with some dry ice in it with you to pre-chill the gun/mag for testing...

John, no lube on or in the mags I rarely use oil on mags unless they are going into long term storage as oil is a dust collector and is more harmful than no oil at all. The only thing I can figure was causing the rounds to fail to feed was the cold. I carry this pistol alot when out in the desert on the ATV exploring and also shoot it out there, never a problem in warm weather. I also have a Pentax 35mm camera that refuses to operate when it's cold. ATV runs great though!
