Post Police overstamp..

Hello!
Just bought a luger. It's a DWM 1917/1920 police rework. It was originally a LP08.

Originally it was marked "S.H.474" (Schutzpolizei, Hannover, gun number 474). But the "H" has been overstamped with "Mg". So now it reads "S.Mg.474" (Schutzpolizei, Magdeburg, gun number 474).

Anyone else seen such an overstamp??

Here are links to 2 pictures:

Hi,

Some research:

In 1932 at the end of the Weimar republic, several parts of the Hannover district (bordering to the Sachsen district, part of which was Magdeburg) became part of the Sachsen district and parts of the Sachsen district became part of the Hannover district.

It seems that this gun, including the police station it was issued to, found itself in Magdeburg in 1932, in the Sachsen district as a result of this reorganization of borders.

Since the marking of small arms was still active in 1932, this meant that guns that were previously struck with Hannover property marks, had to be restruck with Magdeburg property marks.

So this appears to be correct

I must point out that I did find evidence of some border-reshuffeling in 1932, but no paper evidence of the actual restriking of marks and this makes my explanation 'speculation' <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

But since Magdeburg and Hannover are not far away from each other this offers a good explanation for restriking the district description, while the gun number remains equal.
